The PETRONAS MIE Racing Honda team has announced that Malaysia’s Khairul Idham Pawi, commonly known as KIP, and Muhammad Helmi Azman will fill the two highly anticipated wildcard slots for the 2024 Malaysian Grand Prix.

This weekend, at the Sepang PETRONAS International Circuit, the two local stars will join the Moto2 lineup for the final race of MotoGP’s Asia leg.

The official news comes on the heels of a teaser video posted by the team yesterday, fueling excitement and sparking speculation that Japanese rider Kaito Toba might join KIP in the wildcard slots.

In the teaser, two riders wearing PETRONAS MIE Racing Honda gear appeared with different helmet designs associated with Toba and KIP, both active in the WorldSSP class of the World Superbike Championship. However, today’s 3 PM social media announcement confirmed the slots will go to local riders, with Helmi joining KIP.

The PETRONAS MIE Racing Honda post stated, “PETRONAS Wild Card Alert! We’re excited to announce two thrilling wildcard riders joining our Moto2 lineup at the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia 2024 – none other than Malaysia’s very own Khairul Idham Pawi and Muhammad Helmi Azman.”

KIP, who currently competes in the WorldSSP class, will join forces with Helmi, who races for the Boon Siew Honda Racing Team in the Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC).

Last year’s wildcard slots similarly spotlighted local talent, with Azroy Hakeem Anuar and Helmi Azman putting on a spectacular show for Malaysian fans in Moto2.

With this final announcement, fans eagerly anticipate an exhilarating weekend of racing at Sepang as the homegrown talents take on the international field in Moto2.
