KTM Unveils The 2025 990 RC R Prototype

KTM announces a long-awaited return to the supersport market with the 2025 990 RC R due to high demand from orange racing enthusiasts.

KTM Returning to the Supersport Game with the 2025 990 RC R

After a 15-year hiatus, KTM has officially unveiled its highly anticipated return to the supersport segment with the introduction of the 2025 990 RC R.

This strategic move comes amidst KTM’s continued success in the MotoGP World Championship, signifying a calculated decision to capitalize on its growing reputation for performance motorcycles.

The 1190 RC8 and RC8 R, previously offered until 2016, were the last of KTM’s street-legal, fully-faired sportbikes. Since then, the limited-edition RC 8C, a track-only machine with a global production run of just 200 units, has been the sole representative of KTM’s aspirations in the supersport market.

The 2025 990 RC R lineup caters to both street and track enthusiasts. The standard model will be fully homologated for street use, offering exceptional performance for everyday riding. A 990 RC R Track edition, expected for release later in 2025, will cater to dedicated track riders with a more focused and stripped-down configuration, reminiscent of the coveted RC 8C.

This strategic launch reflects KTM’s confidence in the continued demand for high-performance sports bikes. The rapid sell-out of both production runs of the RC 8C, with the first batch of 100 units disappearing in just over four minutes, serves as a strong indicator of rider interest.

Riaan Neveling, Head of KTM Global Marketing, stated in a statement, “The KTM 990 RC R is a groundbreaking innovation for those who live for the thrill of cornering. It’s for those who lean close to the road, almost brushing their knees, and then push the limits, dragging elbows to the tarmac on the racetrack. This bike offers power and prestige without the exorbitant price tag.”

KTM 2025 990 RC R Engine: Leaning on LC8c Performance

The newly announced KTM 2025 990 RC R is expected to leverage a variant of the LC8c engine currently powering the 990 Duke. This liquid-cooled, 8-valve configuration promises a thrilling ride with a focus on performance.

Engine Specifications

Displacement: 947cc

Claimed Horsepower: 123 hp at 9,500 rpm

Claimed Torque: 76 lb-ft at 6,750 rpm

Bore x Stroke: 92.5 x 70.4mm

Technical Enhancements: The LC8c engine in the 990 RC R benefits from several significant upgrades compared to previous iterations. These include:

New Internal Components: Fresh pistons, rods, and cranks optimize power delivery and durability.

Revised Cam Timing: Fine-tuned cam timing optimizes the engine’s powerband for a more responsive and exhilarating riding experience.

Enhanced Exhaust System: A new exhaust system contributes to both performance gains and potential emissions compliance.

Shifting Versatility: An interesting rider-centric feature is the standard shifter’s ability to be easily reversed to a racing shift pattern. This caters to both street riders and track enthusiasts, offering a customizable shifting experience for optimal performance in any riding scenario.

Ready to Race, Built to Race: Chassis, Ergonomics, and Aerodynamics

The new KTM 990 RC R isn’t just about looking good, it’s built to rip corners. The steel frame is designed to feel balanced and turn on a dime, with a stiff body that can handle hard riding without getting wobbly.

Rider comfort is a focus too, with extensively tested contact points on the tank and a new fuel tank design for a supportive riding position. Adjustable footpegs and fully customizable WP APEX suspension further personalize the experience.

The aggressive bodywork that includes the MotoGP heritage is evident with the wind tunnel-tested aero wings isn’t just for looks – it provides crucial downforce during braking and cornering.

This focus on performance extends beyond the base model. With minimal modifications, the 990 RC R transforms into a track-ready weapon via the 990 RC R Track edition. Crafted at KTM’s Austrian factory, these modifications remove unnecessary street components, add protective gear, and fine-tune the bike for racing, including a full exhaust system.

Easy maintenance, low upkeep needs, and extensive dealer support round out the package, ensuring riders can concentrate solely on achieving the fastest lap times. With its exceptional handling, rider-centric design, and undeniable racing pedigree, the KTM 990 RC R promises to be a champion on both the track and the open road.
