In a significant move towards promoting sustainable mobility, the Malaysian government launched the Electric Motorcycle Use Scheme, popularly known as ‘MARIICas,’ on December 8. Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz made the announcement and inaugurated the event. The scheme aims to encourage the adoption of electric motorcycles by offering a substantial RM2,400 rebate to eligible buyers.
The initiative is tailored for individuals with an annual income of RM120,000 and below. The scheme aligns with the National Energy Transition Roadmap. Minister Tengku Zafrul shared this information during a live broadcast on the Selamat Pagi Malaysia television programme.
During the Budget 2024 unveiling, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed the government’s plan to launch the electric motorcycle use program to the public this month. This move signifies a crucial step forward in promoting green transportation.
Managed by the Malaysian Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii), ‘MARIICas’ seeks to drive the adoption of electric motorcycles.
This schememovement significantly contributes to the nation’s sustainability goals. Moreover, Minister Tengku Zafrul highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. As part of this effort, Malaysia aims to increase the number of EV charging locations. The government targets a total of 10,000 charging points by 2025. He emphasized the government’s readiness to provide incentives to companies investing in EV chargers. This is to ensure the growth of the EV ecosystem.
Additionally, Tengku Zafrul mentioned considering tax incentives for home charging services. This demonstrates the government’s comprehensive approach to fostering a robust electric mobility infrastructure in Malaysia.
As the Electric Motorcycle Use Scheme takes centre stage, it signals Malaysia’s commitment to embracing sustainable transportation solutions. This propels the nation towards a greener, more environmentally conscious future. The launch of ‘MARIICas’ is anticipated to mark a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to transition towards cleaner and more energy-efficient modes of transportation.
