Former MotoGP race winner Aleix Espargaró will return to the grid for his second wildcard appearance of the 2025 season, confirmed to race at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone with Honda. The outing marks Honda’s third consecutive wildcard entry this season as the Japanese manufacturer ramps up its development programme.
Espargaró, who retired from full-time racing at the end of 2024, previously made his wildcard debut for Honda at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez this past April. His upcoming appearance at Silverstone is set to be particularly symbolic, as it was the very circuit where he clinched a memorable victory in 2023.
The 34-year-old Spaniard has taken on the role of test rider for Honda in a bid to help the struggling marque regain competitiveness in the premier class. His contributions are already showing signs of progress, with the factory’s satellite team LCR recently securing a remarkable win at the French Grand Prix through Johann Zarco. The victory marked Honda’s first since Alex Rins triumphed at COTA in 2023.
Another promising result came from Honda test rider Takaaki Nakagami, who finished sixth on the streets of Le Mans, further underscoring the team’s recent upward trajectory. The win in France also prevented Ducati from breaking the all-time record for consecutive MotoGP wins. Ducati and Honda now stand level with 22 victories each, a testament to Honda’s resurgence under the technical leadership of Romano Albesiano and the on-track input from Espargaró.
