When BMW unveiled the R 1300 GS, it was only a matter of time before its 1,300cc air- and liquid-cooled Boxer engine made its way into more models. Now, newly released certification data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirms that BMW will introduce the R 1300 R, R 1300 RS, and R 1300 RT for the 2026 model year.

What We Know About the New Models

As expected, BMW is following its traditional naming convention:

  • R 1300 R – A naked roadster version of the GS, likely offering a sportier riding experience.
  • R 1300 RS – A faired version of the R 1300 R, aimed at riders seeking more wind protection and aerodynamics.
  • R 1300 RT – A sport-touring model designed for long-distance comfort and practicality.

All three models share the same EPA certification as the R 1300 GS and R 1300 GS Adventure, though it’s unclear if they will retain the same power output of 145 hp at 7,750 rpm and 110 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm or receive tuning adjustments.

BMW’s Automated Shift Assistant (ASA), which debuted on the GS Adventure, is expected to be available on these new models. This feature allows clutch-free shifting, making riding smoother and reducing fatigue on long journeys.

BMW’s Modular Platform Approach

The GS introduced a new sheet metal main frame, which optimized space for the airbox, fuel tank, and other components. This design also allows for a longer swingarm while reducing wheelbase, improving handling and performance. The same modular approach will likely make adapting the platform for these new models easier and more efficient.

Introducing the R 12 G/S: A New Air/Oil-Cooled Option

The EPA data also confirms the existence of a new BMW R 12 G/S, which will run on the same 1,170cc air/oil-cooled DOHC Boxer engine found in the R 12 nineT roadster and R 12 cruiser. While exact power figures for the R 12 G/S remain unknown, its sibling models claim:

  • R 12 nineT: 109 hp at 7,000 rpm and 85 lb-ft at 6,500 rpm
  • R 12: 95 hp at 6,500 rpm and 81 lb-ft at 6,000 rpm

The R 12 G/S appears to follow the tradition of BMW’s previous Urban G/S variant from the R nineT lineup, paying homage to the original R 80 G/S. However, the removal of “Urban” from the name suggests a more off-road-focused design, possibly with longer-travel suspension and a 21-inch front wheel.

When Will BMW Officially Announce These Models?

While the certification data confirms these models are on the way, BMW has yet to make an official announcement. Given the significance of these new bikes, an unveiling is likely to happen in the next couple of months, rather than waiting for the traditional fall new-model releases.

Final Thoughts

BMW’s expansion of the R 1300 lineup signals an exciting future for its boxer-powered motorcycles, catering to both adventure riders and sport-touring enthusiasts. With the R 12 G/S offering a classic air/oil-cooled option, BMW is ensuring that riders of all preferences have something to look forward to in 2026.
