Marc Marquez’s return to the pinnacle of MotoGP has been nothing short of electrifying. After securing both the Sprint and the Grand Prix victories in the season-opening round in Thailand, the eight-time world champion has positioned himself as the early favourite for the 2025 MotoGP World Championship. His dominant display has even drawn comparisons to Max Verstappen’s record-breaking 2023 Formula 1 season, a claim made by none other than 1999 500cc World Champion Alex Criville.

A Performance Reminiscent of Max Verstappen

Criville, the first Spanish rider to win a premier class title, was thoroughly impressed by Marquez’s strategy and execution in Thailand. Riding for Ducati Lenovo, Marquez took the lead in the opening six laps before deliberately dropping to second place to regulate his front tyre pressure. With just two laps remaining, he reclaimed the lead and cruised to victory with a comfortable 1.5-second margin.

Criville likened this calculated dominance to Verstappen’s remarkable 2023 Formula 1 campaign, where the Dutchman won 19 out of 22 races, often making victory seem effortless.

“The favourite [for the title] is clearly Marc Marquez,” Criville told Radio Marca, as reported by Relevo. “Marc looks very happy, especially seeing his brother perform well and finishing on the podium. Bagnaia will need to step up because Marc is clearly superior this season and in peak form.”

Marquez in the Perfect Position

For Marquez, the opening round in Thailand could not have gone any better. Not only did he secure a double victory, but his younger brother Alex Marquez also finished second. This marked a historic moment for the Marquez family.

“You can’t start better, with the Marquez brothers finishing first and second in Thailand,” Criville added. “Now, Marc is in the best shape, with the best bike, the best team, and is highly motivated. If nothing unexpected happens, he has a great chance to fight for the championship after several years without being in contention.”

The Road Ahead

Marquez knows the season is long. With 21 races left, rivals like reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia will push hard. But if Marquez keeps up his Thailand form, he could reclaim the MotoGP throne in style.

Could this be the year Marquez cements his legacy further with another championship? If Thailand was any indication, his rivals have every reason to be concerned.
