If you’re unfamiliar with Koraidon, you’re not alone. Unless you’re a Pokémon enthusiast, the name might not ring a bell. Koraidon is a Legendary Dragon-type Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Scarlet (2022). Now, in a stunning crossover between pop culture and cutting-edge engineering, Honda has unveiled a concept bike inspired by Koraidon, just in time for this year’s Pokémon Day.

A History of Pokémon and Automotive Collaborations

Over the past decade, Pokémon has collaborated with various industries, including automotive giants. One notable partnership was with the Toyota Engineering Society, which developed the “Toyota Miraidon” motorcycle based on another Legendary Pokémon from Pokémon Violet. Now, Honda is following suit with the Koraidon-inspired concept bike, taking the Pokémon-themed vehicle trend to a new level.

A Concept Like No Other

Honda’s Koraidon motorcycle isn’t just a simple themed bike; it’s an ambitious fusion of technology and fantasy. Unlike the in-game version, where Koraidon’s wheel-like limbs don’t actually spin, Honda’s real-world concept bike improves upon this by ensuring functionality while maintaining the Pokémon’s signature aesthetics.

The official press release states that the Honda Koraidon can operate in its “Sprinting Build,” which allows it to shift between walking on all four legs and standing upright on two wheels. This seemingly impossible feat is made possible by Honda’s Riding Assist technology, originally showcased at CES 2017. Developed using self-balancing robotics from the ASIMO humanoid research program, this technology enables the bike to maintain stability in both modes.

Bringing Koraidon to Life

Beyond its movement, Honda has gone to great lengths to ensure authenticity. The Koraidon bike replicates the Pokémon’s height (8 feet 2 inches or 2.489 meters) and weight (668 lb or 303 kg). It also incorporates animated features, including synchronized eye movements and dynamic limb positioning, adding to the illusion of a living Pokémon.

The project involved around 40 engineers from Honda’s Innovative Research Excellence division, as well as specialists from its Motorcycle and Power Products teams. Their goal? To create a life-size, functional representation of Koraidon that brings childhood dreams to reality, embodied in Honda’s tagline: Honda’s Devotion Makes Children’s Dreams Come True.

Where to See the Honda Koraidon

While it’s unlikely this Pokémon-inspired motorcycle will hit international markets anytime soon, lucky fans in Japan will get an exclusive first look. The Honda Koraidon Project will be on display at the Honda Welcome Plaza Aoyama in Tokyo from March 7 to 9, giving Pokémon enthusiasts a rare opportunity to witness this incredible fusion of animation and engineering.

For those who have always dreamed of riding a Legendary Pokémon, Honda’s Koraidon concept proves that sometimes, fantasy can become reality—at least for a moment.
