BMW Motorrad Japan introduced the “R12 Custom Project” in August, debuting the first official customizations of the R12.
This project underscores BMW’s commitment to catering to diverse global markets, with four celebrated Japanese builders creating unique versions of the R12 cruiser. All these four custom builds, showcased at Tokyo’s FREUDE by BMW gallery from August 23-30, highlight the R12’s adaptability while honouring Japan’s rich custom bike heritage.
Launched in 2023 and inspired by BMW’s classic 1935 model, the R12 features an 1169cc horizontally opposed two-cylinder engine delivering 95PS at 6,500 rpm, a long steel frame, and 19-inch front wheels.
Designed for both relaxed cruising and spirited riding, the R12 also includes two ride modes, further showcasing its versatility in these four new custom interpretations. Now let’s take a look at these custom creations below;
“El Viento” by Hamans Custom
Hamans Custom reimagined the R12 with a café racer flair. By lowering the subframe and redesigning the fuel tank, the “El Viento” exudes an old-school vibe with hand-formed side panels, a dual headlight setup, and a small fairing. Finished in sleek grey, this build brings vintage-inspired beauty to modern performance.
“MOON Arrow” by Mooneyes
MOONEYES, a legend in Japanese custom builds, crafted the “Moon Arrow,” inspired by racing aesthetics. Using BMW K-series wheels and a unique lunar disc, this build includes a handmade aluminium fairing and a one-piece moulded tank-seat combo, creating a streamlined profile reminiscent of land speed record bikes. The forward-leaning position and signature Mooneyes styling emphasize speed and aerodynamics.
“Legal Weapon R12” by Trijya Custom
The “Legal Weapon R12” by Trijya Custom emphasizes cutting-edge components, with carbon wings and 3D-printed side panels. Featuring a modified fuel tank, custom suspension by YSS, and modular wheels, this futuristic cruiser also includes a bespoke handlebar from Aella, making it both performance-focused and visually striking.
“R12 Sand Speeder Mark I” by Chirihama Sand Flats
Built by Chirihama Sand Flats, the “R12 Sand Speeder Mark I” is designed for off-road racing. This rugged build includes a distinctive parabolic front wheel, a stiffer rear section, and a lower height. Its elongated tail, long exhaust, and repositioned fuel pump make it ready for sand drags, showcasing a minimalist yet functional design.
Each custom R12 reflects the signature styles of its creators, underscoring the bike’s adaptability. As BMW Motorrad broadens its reach, these builds reinforce the R12’s appeal for enthusiasts across varied riding cultures and terrains.
