Jorge Martin Dominates Mandalika, Extends Championship Lead

“The Martinator” claims his first win at Mandalika, increasing his lead over Bagnaia as the MotoGP season heats up.

Pramac Racing’s Jorge Martin delivered a stunning victory at the Indonesian MotoGP Race 2, strengthening his position in the 2024 World Championship standings. The 26-year-old Spaniard secured his first Sunday win since the French GP, finishing ahead of Pedro Acosta in second, and extending his lead to 21 points.

Known as “The Martinator,” Martin’s victory marked his first at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit after crashing out in both 2022 and 2023, as well as in this year’s Tissot Sprint. The win earned him 25 valuable championship points, widening the gap between him and rival Francesco Bagnaia, who managed third place after a late push.

At the challenging and sweltering Mandalika Circuit, the opening lap saw the drama unfold with a multi-rider crash at Turn 3 involving Alex Marquez, Aleix Espargaro, Jack Miller, and Luca Marini. 

Marc Marquez, riding for Gresini Racing, saw his hopes dashed when technical issues forced him out on Lap 12, with his bike catching fire. Meanwhile, Fabio Di Giannantonio fought fiercely with Marquez but crashed at Turn 10, dropping him down the order.

Ducati Lenovo rider Bastianini was displaying an impressive pace, but disaster struck when he crashed entering Turn 1 on Lap 21. The incident dealt a major setback to the Italian, leaving him more than 70 points behind Martin in the Championship. By then, only 12 riders were left in the Indonesian Grand Prix, with just two still in contention for the title.

Martin controlled the pace up front, crossing the line 1.404 seconds ahead of rookie Pedro Acosta. Bagnaia’s third-place finish earned him crucial points as the season heads into its final five races.

Franco Morbidelli impressed with a fourth-place finish, continuing his strong form, while Marco Bezzecchi rounded out the top five. Maverick Viñales finished sixth as the top Aprilia rider, with Fabio Quartararo from Monster Energy Yamaha finishing in seventh, marking his third consecutive top-10 finish.

Johann Zarco secured ninth for Honda LCR, Honda’s best result of the season, while Raul Fernandez from Trackhouse Racing completed the top 10.
