Reviving the Rotax Flat Tracker Legend

Reviving the Rotax Flat Tracker Legend

At Deus Workshop in Venice, Los Angeles, a legendary machine patiently awaits to unleash its roaring power on the track.

‘The Lamina Nera’ epitomizes flat track racing, blending the legendary Rotax engine with the iconic Wood frame for unparalleled performance. After meticulous craftsmanship and a global journey, it’s ready to relive its glory days.

In 1983, Ron Wood crafted the dominant Wood-Rotax short track bike, later licensed by Harley-Davidson, a proud achievement for his team.

This journey began in the early ’70s when Ron, initially using Ducati engines, ventured into crafting short track frames.

To excel in AMA Grand National racing, he chose the European Rotax engine, celebrated for its torque and unwavering reliability—an ideal choice.

In the USA, they made minor changes to the chassis and engine. They added a custom DBR stainless steel exhaust system and racing silencer.

Modern filtration protects the engine. Lamina Nera’s suspension received an upgrade with Yamaha R6 forks tuned by Germany’s Oram suspension in the front and track-spec TFX Suspension shocks in the rear.

Upon returning home, they replaced the Grimeca rear brake with a custom Italian-made Discacciati setup. Sleek black-coated vintage alloy wheels from California’s Performance Machine now wear Maxxis flat-track tires.

The sleek lines of Lamina Nera stem from a purpose-built tank and seat combo by Redmax Speed Shop in the UK. Deus race plates and bold graphics complete its aesthetic.

Yet, convenience matters too. An electric start simplifies life on the track for Deus Milano’s Marco, who will ride it in the Thunderbike class.

As Lamina Nera readies to etch its legacy, we envy those who’ll experience the thrill of sliding sideways on this iconic machine. It’s more than a motorcycle; it symbolizes flat track racing’s enduring spirit and masterful craftsmanship.
