American Ducati rider Carlin Dunne killed in a crash at Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. He suffered a fatal crash meters away from the finish line.
Racing organizations try to do everything to make racers as safe as possible. But sometimes accidents happen. There’s nothing we can do about that. Unfortunately, this Sunday a fatal accident happened at the famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
American rider Carlin Dunne killed in a crash at Pikes Peak motorcycle race. The Ducati rider was riding the prototype of the new Streetfighter V4. Prior to this year’s race, he was already the favorite to win the race. During practice and qualifying sessions, Carlin Dunne dominated and was the fastest rider to climb the mountain.
On Sunday he was on the way for another Pikes Peak victory. He was already the fastest rider on the three lower timed sectors and was on the way to claim victory and a new course record.
But almost at the end of the course, he suffered a crash. Already with the finish line on his sight, Carlin Dunne lost the control of the Streetfighter V4 prototype after going over a bump on the road. He was taken to hospital and a few hours later Pikes Peak organizers and Ducati North-America gave the bad news.
Carlin Dunne was known as “The King of the Mountain”. He held the course record for many years. In 2012 he was the first motorcycle racer to climb the mountain in under the 10 minutes’ time. He then continued to dominate the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, setting new records, and also racing electric motorcycles.
To the family and friends of Carlin Dunne, the iMotorbike team sends our deepest condolences.
