Somkiat Chantra’s preparations for his rookie MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship season suffered an early setback after his injury in a training accident at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit.
The 27-year-old Thai racer initially returned to Thailand for further medical evaluation following the incident. After additional assessments, doctors decided that he needed surgery on both arms and successfully performed the procedures on Saturday, January 17 at Bangkok Hospital.
Honda HRC confirmed the news in an official statement, providing a brief update on Chantra’s condition: “Following further medical examinations after his return to Thailand, Somkiat Chantra successfully underwent surgery on both arms on Saturday, January 17th, at Bangkok Hospital. Doctors placed his right arm in a cast, while his left arm did not require one. Further updates on Chantra’s recovery timeline will be provided in due course.”
Chantra is set to make his full-time WorldSBK debut in 2026 after stepping up from Moto2, marking a significant milestone in his racing career. However, this injury now raises questions over the timing of his return to full fitness and his readiness for pre-season testing and early rounds of the championship.
For now, Honda HRC and Chantra’s fans will be waiting for further medical updates as he begins his recovery process.
