Honda MotoGP rider Luca Marini is currently hospitalized in Japan after suffering a severe crash while testing at Suzuka Circuit for the upcoming 2025 Suzuka 8-Hour endurance race.

The Italian was in Japan this week as part of Honda’s factory testing programme, riding the CBR1000RR-R SP superbike in hopes of earning a place in HRC’s line-up for the prestigious event. According to an official statement from Honda, Marini completed a productive first day on the bike on Tuesday, but crashed heavily on Wednesday during the second day of testing.

The crash has resulted in serious injuries, including a dislocated left hip, sternum and collarbone fractures, ligament damage in his left knee, and a right-sided pneumothorax (collapsed lung). Marini was immediately transferred to a local hospital where he was stabilised and is now under medical observation. Honda confirmed he will remain in Japan until he is deemed fit to travel.

The full Honda statement reads:

“On Wednesday, May 28, Luca Marini suffered a heavy fall while testing for the Suzuka 8-Hour and will remain in Japan for observation and recovery. After the British GP, Luca Marini travelled to the Suzuka Circuit for a first test on the CBR1000RR-R SP. Having completed a successful first day, the Italian began the second day of his program but crashed heavily. Suffering from a dislocated left hip, damage to the ligaments in his left knee, fractures in the sternum and left collarbone, and a right-sided pneumothorax, Marini was transferred to local hospital and stabilised.”

Marini is currently 13th in the 2025 MotoGP championship standings with 38 points, making him the second-best Honda rider on the grid. His best finish so far this season is eighth place.

With the next round of the MotoGP calendar set to take place at Aragon next weekend, it is unlikely that Marini will be fit to participate. Honda may consider calling up one of its test riders, Takaaki Nakagami or Aleix Espargaro, as a substitute depending on Marini’s recovery timeline.

Marini’s current contract with Honda expires at the end of the 2025 season. He recently revealed that discussions were ongoing regarding a possible extension beyond this year.

He will remain in Japan until he is deemed fit to travel.
