In a significant development ahead of the 2025 FIM Superbike World Championship, Yamaha Motor Europe has confirmed that Augusto Fernández will replace the injured Jonathan Rea for the upcoming Portimão round at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.
Jonathan Rea’s Setback
Jonathan Rea, the six-time world champion, suffered multiple fractures to his left foot following a crash during the traditional pre-season test at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. Rea’s injuries, which rendered him unfit for the opening round in Australia, necessitated immediate medical attention. After returning to Belfast, the Northern Irish rider underwent successful surgery on 21 February. The precise rehabilitation timeline remains uncertain. Rea’s current recovery means he will miss both the Portimão test scheduled for 14-15 March and Round 2 of the championship from 28-30 March.
Augusto Fernández: A Promising Substitute
Stepping into this challenging role is 27-year-old Augusto Fernández, a rider with a robust racing pedigree. Fernández is known for his accomplishments as the 2022 Moto2 World Champion and his recent experience in the premier MotoGP class. He has been working as a Yamaha Factory Racing test rider. Although he has yet to ride the Yamaha R1 WorldSBK and is less accustomed to the specific dynamics of Pirelli tyres, his familiarity with the Portimão circuit and recent racing experience provide a strong foundation for his debut in WorldSBK.
Reflecting on his new opportunity, Fernández remarked, “First of all I would like to send my best wishes for a speedy recovery to Jonathan Rea and to thank Yamaha for this opportunity. This will be my first experience of racing with the R1 but also of racing in WorldSBK. I can’t wait to get to the Portimão test to spend some time on the bike and to see how it feels.”

Team Optimism and Future Prospects
Niccolò Canepa, Road Racing Sporting Manager for Yamaha Motor Europe, expressed both relief and optimism regarding the situation:
“Jonathan has been sorely missed here in Phillip Island, but we are happy that the surgery on his injuries was successful and that he has now started the recovery process. We hope to see him fully fit and back on the bike as soon as possible. In the meantime, we spoke with Augusto and Yamaha Motor Racing about the possibility he could stand in for Jonathan in Portimão and he was keen to do so. He is familiar with the circuit, and with the test scheduled ahead of the race we can give him track time with the R1 WorldSBK ahead of the event. We must thank Yamaha Motor Racing and the MotoGP team for their support, and we are looking forward to welcoming Augusto to the team and to the WorldSBK paddock.”
The upcoming two-day test in Portimão will be critical for Fernández. It will allow him to acclimate to the nuances of the R1 WorldSBK and fine-tune his performance under race conditions. His successful adaptation could boost Yamaha’s prospects in the championship. It would also serve as an important stepping stone in his burgeoning career in WorldSBK.
Looking Ahead
As the championship unfolds, all eyes will be on both Jonathan Rea’s recovery progress and Augusto Fernández’s performance on the track. Yamaha Motor Europe remains hopeful that Rea will return stronger. The team is also hoping that Fernández will make a strong impression. This would ensure that the team continues to be competitive in the highly anticipated season.
This development underscores the unpredictable nature of motorsports, where resilience and adaptability are just as crucial as technical prowess on race day. Fans and pundits alike will be keenly watching how the substitution impacts the dynamics of the upcoming rounds.
