In a groundbreaking development, White Motorcycle Concepts (WMC) has partnered with Zero Motorcycles to introduce the world’s first electric sports motorcycle to incorporate WMC’s patented aerodynamic duct. The revolutionary concept bike, named the WMC Zero SRS Intelligent Aero Prototype (WMCSRS), promises to enhance range and performance by significantly reducing aerodynamic drag, setting a new standard for electric motorcycle innovation.
Making its global debut at Motorcycle Live in the UK from 16th to 24th November 2024, this prototype represents a major leap forward in electric motorcycle design and efficiency.
Key Features of the WMC Zero SRS Intelligent Aero Prototype
The WMCSRS is a re-engineered version of Zero Motorcycles’ SR/S model, which now includes a unique, bifurcated aerodynamic duct that channels airflow directly through the motorcycle. Air is collected behind the front wheel and exits above the rear, minimizing drag by an impressive 10%. To maximize this effect, the prototype includes custom-designed front fenders and fork shrouds that streamline airflow through the duct system, enhancing the bike’s overall efficiency.
Robert White, Founder and CEO of WMC, emphasized that the challenges facing electric motorcycles require more than advances in battery technology alone. “This problem space will not be solved by battery technology alone,” said White. “Our intelligent aero duct enhances aerodynamic efficiency, positively impacting power consumption, especially at high speeds.” This duct, initially developed as part of WMC’s land-speed record program, has now been optimized for electric motorcycles.
Engineering the Future of EV Motorcycles
The collaboration between WMC and Zero Motorcycles began in November 2023 at the Italian Motorcycle Show (EICMA), where the companies shared a vision of advancing efficient motorcycle design to meet the evolving expectations of electric motorcycle users. The Zero SR/S’s architecture provided the ideal foundation for integrating WMC’s patented duct, leading to a focused, accelerated development program.
WMC’s engineering team drew from expertise honed in F1 and sports car programs to model, prototype, and validate this concept using state-of-the-art fluid dynamics simulations and aero rakes. Testing revealed that a refined airflow system with enhanced front fenders and fork shrouds yielded a significant increase in efficiency. The resulting WMCSRS prototype delivers a 10% aerodynamic efficiency gain, translating directly to extended range or reduced battery demands.
The Future Potential of Intelligent Aerodynamics in Motorcycles
Abe Askenazi, CTO of Zero Motorcycles, emphasized the broader potential of this project, noting that battery development alone will not define the future of electric motorcycles. “We believe a combination of technologies is the key to developing the electric motorcycles of the future,” said Askenazi. The insights from this proof of concept demonstrate that the integration of WMC’s aerodynamic duct could be a game-changer for electric motorcycles, especially as demand for range and performance increases.
The integration of intelligent aerodynamics offers practical advantages beyond increased range: a lower need for larger batteries reduces weight, charging time, and overall battery costs. Furthermore, the efficiency gains from the duct become more pronounced at higher speeds, providing advantages that standard battery technology struggles to match.
Looking Ahead: A Virtuous Cycle of Efficiency
The WMC and Zero Motorcycles partnership embodies the future of sustainable motorcycling. As battery energy density improves over time, it will be possible to integrate even larger ducts into motorcycles without sacrificing size or comfort, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of benefits: greater aerodynamic efficiency, fewer batteries, and further space for efficiency-enhancing designs. This trajectory mirrors trends in the automotive industry, where modern electric and hybrid cars have achieved up to 30% greater efficiency than those of just five years ago.
The WMCSRS prototype’s debut at Motorcycle Live 2024 offers enthusiasts a first look at this technology. Located at Stand 4A15, Zero Motorcycles will showcase this pioneering collaboration, inspiring a new era of innovation in the motorcycle industry and a step toward net-zero mobility.
The WMC Zero SRS Intelligent Aero Prototype is more than just a bike; it’s a proof of concept that showcases how collaborations can push the boundaries of what’s possible.
