Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) will allocate RM90 million for a period of two years in the construction of direct current (DC) charging stations for electric vehicles (EV) in Malaysia.

Project management program director for electric vehicles, Mohd Junaizee Mohd Noor confirmed the matter through a statement. He explained that TNB has already taken the first step by building three EV charging stations. The stations are in the R&R area of Ayer Keroh (Melaka), Tapah (Perak) and Paka (Terengganu).

“We aim to build seven more EV charging stations in Malaysia by the end of this year. The stations will be on the North-South Highway (PLUS).

“TNB will have a total of 10 DC EV charging stations along the highway by the end of the year.”

Junaizee stated that the initiative is to make it easier for the public to charge their EV vehicles. Commuters will no longer need to be afraid of running out of battery.

One of the main challenges of installing an EV charging station is the approval process from the local authority (PBT). This is because each PBT has different rules and terms. It will create constraints on the construction of charging stations.
