In Wanaque, New Jersey, Santa Claus does not ride on his sleigh but rather chooses to travel by his motorcycle instead to hand out presents and treats.
Around this time of the year, Christmas is near and nine Santas will be riding on their bikes on the streets for the second time in three years as last year’s event got cancelled due to weather issues. Instead of reindeers and ribbons and a big ol’ duffel bag, these Santas ride with the Grinch and even a penguin.
“It was excellent,” said Wanaque police Lt. Charlie Huber, wearing a red and white suit and a matching Santa hat over his black helmet as he led the pack on his police Harley with sirens blaring. “I had a blast.”
Christmas carols and sirens blast the street and welcomed a crowd not limited to just children, but also adults who seem very fascinated with the whole scene and idea.
“People came running out. Everybody had such a great time. Everybody in town seemed to enjoy it.”
“It turned into, well, we should bring candy canes or whatever because it’s going to be kids that want us to stop,” Thacker said. “So then we went out and bought candy canes.”
The Santa squad also made improvements following the first two years of experience.
“We had no idea what we were doing,” Thacker said. “We didn’t have any kind of police escort or anything. We added that this year. We had a little bit of an idea which way we should go.”
Overall the whole event was a great success and we certainly cannot wait to see what new flare will be added to next year’s event!
