Two collection agents under the MyEG Group failed to remit RM314 million in government revenue collected between May 19 and September 30, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Speaking at a press conference, Loke clarified that the RM314 million was not accumulated over three years, as previously reported, but built up rapidly over the past five months. The Ministry of Transport (MOT) and Road Transport Department (JPJ) had been taking steps since May to recover the outstanding amount.
The two collection agents, My EG Sdn Bhd and Zetrix AI Bhd, were appointed to collect payments for various JPJ-related services, including road tax and driving licence renewals, as well as traffic summonses.
Under the arrangement, the agents are required to transfer collected revenue to the government within one business day. Loke said minor delays had occurred in the past but were generally resolved after reminder notices were issued.
However, the latest outstanding amount continued to grow despite repeated efforts by the authorities. Loke said the ministry had held four engagement sessions involving stakeholders including the Finance Ministry and issued 35 reminders, along with a deadline for the arrears to be settled.
RM231 Million Cheque Not Processed
Loke revealed that a cheque for RM231 million was issued on August 21 and post-dated to September 30 to settle part of the outstanding amount.
However, when the cheque was presented to the bank on September 30, it was not processed following instructions from the company. As a result, the ministry and JPJ decided to suspend payment services through the MyEG and Zetrix AI channels.
Loke said clearing the entire RM314 million debt is a non-negotiable requirement before the companies can resume their role as collection agents. He added that even if the arrears are settled, any future arrangement would come with additional conditions.
Among the proposed changes is a requirement for payments to be credited directly into the government account, rather than being routed through the existing collection structure.
MyJPJ To Reduce Reliance On Third-Party Agents
The government is also looking to reduce motorists’ reliance on third-party agents by expanding the capabilities of the MyJPJ mobile application.
Loke said new features are expected to be introduced next month as part of a broader effort to allow motorists to access more JPJ services directly.
Around 20% of motorists still rely on external agents, although Loke stressed that the current remittance issue is specific to MyEG, which is the country’s largest JPJ agent by transaction volume.
Other collection agents, including Pos Malaysia, reportedly have no outstanding arrears and will continue providing their services as usual.
Loke also dismissed speculation surrounding alleged corporate links between MyEG and political parties, saying such matters were irrelevant to the government’s enforcement action. He stressed that the decision was based on financial compliance.
He also attributed the government’s ability to suspend MyEG’s services without disrupting public infrastructure to anti-monopoly measures introduced since 2022, including the expansion of access to driving institutes.
Zetrix Says It Is Working To Resolve Arrears
Meanwhile, Zetrix AI Bhd has submitted a proposal to the government to resolve the RM314 million outstanding revenue collection payments.
In a statement, the company said its immediate priority is to settle its obligations and restore the affected services, subject to the necessary approvals.
Zetrix said it understood the importance of keeping JPJ services accessible and reliable, adding that it has served as a JPJ service provider since 2000.
The company also confirmed that customer transactions made before the suspension date had been processed and completed. Meanwhile, Zetrix AI shares opened at 7 sen on October 6, slightly higher than its previous closing price of 6.5 sen.
For motorists, the suspension means those who previously relied on MyEG or Zetrix AI for JPJ-related payments will need to use alternative authorised channels while the government reviews the collection arrangement.
