In Malaysia, the supermoped or “kapcai” segment above 150cc continues to grow rapidly. Over the past few years, more riders have been shifting towards these lightweight yet powerful machines for daily commuting and even weekend rides. With new models entering the market, including offerings like the Modenas Z15GT, competition in this category is getting stronger.

Among all these options, one name still stands out strongly, the Yamaha Y16ZR. Distributed by Hong Leong Yamaha Motor, the Y16ZR has remained one of the most recognisable and popular choices among Malaysian riders since its introduction.

Launched as the Successor to the Y15ZR

The Yamaha Y16ZR was officially launched in Malaysia in March 2021 at the Sepang International Circuit, marking a new chapter for Yamaha’s supermoped lineup.

Positioned as the successor to the highly popular Yamaha Y15ZR, the Y16ZR introduced several major upgrades including a more powerful engine, a 6-speed gearbox, and a sharper, more aggressive design.

More recently, Yamaha updated the model with a new ABS-equipped variant launched in January 2024, priced at RM11,118 excluding insurance and registration.

Engine and Technology Upgrades

At the heart of the Yamaha Y16ZR is a 155cc, liquid-cooled, SOHC engine equipped with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA). This setup produces around 17.7 horsepower and 14.4 Nm of torque, giving it a noticeable performance boost over its predecessor.

The inclusion of VVA technology allows the engine to switch between two cam profiles, ensuring strong performance at both low and high RPM. This not only improves acceleration but also helps maintain fuel efficiency, making it suitable for both city riding and longer journeys.

Other highlights include a 6-speed transmission, assist and slipper clutch, LED lighting, and a 5.4-litre fuel tank, all contributing to a more refined riding experience.

Sporty Design with Modern Features

In terms of design, the Y16ZR builds on the familiar styling of the Y15ZR but introduces sharper lines and a more aggressive stance. Updates can be seen on the headlamp, side panels and tail section, giving the bike a more modern and sporty look.

Weighing around 119 kg, slightly heavier than the Y15ZR, the Y16ZR still maintains a lightweight and agile feel. It comes equipped with front and rear disc brakes, with ABS available on newer variants for added safety.

The bike rides on 17-inch wheels fitted with 90/80 front and 120/70 rear tyres, offering a balanced combination of grip and stability for everyday use.

Practical Performance for Malaysian Roads

On the road, the Yamaha Y16ZR delivers a riding experience that feels both familiar and improved. Much like its predecessor, it offers excellent handling thanks to its compact size, low seat height and balanced wheelbase.

Acceleration is smooth and responsive, making it suitable for daily commuting. On highways, the bike is capable of reaching speeds above 130 km/h, with some riders even pushing closer to 140 km/h under the right conditions.

In heavy traffic, which is a common scenario in areas like Klang Valley, the Y16ZR shines with its nimble handling. Lane splitting is effortless, and the added power makes overtaking easier compared to the older Y15ZR.

Braking performance is also improved, especially with the addition of front ABS in newer models, providing extra confidence during emergency stops or wet conditions.

Y16ZR vs Y15ZR: What’s the Difference?

While both models share a similar foundation, the Y16ZR brings several key improvements over the Y15ZR.

The most notable difference lies in the engine, with the Y16ZR’s 155cc unit offering more power and featuring VVA technology. It also comes with a 6-speed gearbox, compared to the 5-speed setup on the Y15ZR.

In terms of dimensions, both bikes share the same wheelbase of 1,290 mm, but the Y16ZR features a slightly different overall shape with improved ground clearance and a larger fuel tank.

Feature-wise, both models include LED lighting, LCD displays and basic modern conveniences, but the Y16ZR edges ahead with more advanced performance and safety features.

Still a Top Choice in the Supermoped Market

Despite increasing competition in Malaysia’s supermoped segment, the Yamaha Y16ZR continues to hold its ground as one of the most popular choices among riders.

With its blend of performance, modern technology and everyday practicality, it appeals to a wide range of users, from daily commuters to enthusiasts looking for a fun and capable small-capacity machine.

As the segment continues to evolve, the Y16ZR remains a strong benchmark, proving that Yamaha still knows exactly what Malaysian riders want in a supermoped.
