Getting a motorcycle licence is a big step for many young people, especially those who received theirs through the MyLesen B2 programme in Sibu. But that freedom also comes with responsibility, and the handover ceremony strongly emphasised this message.
Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng reminded the youths that a licence isn’t a pass to ride recklessly. Instead, it reflects trust that they will follow traffic rules and ride responsibly. His reminder comes as illegal racing continues to be a concern in Sibu, despite ongoing enforcement efforts. Last year alone, police carried out dozens of operations, leading to arrests, hundreds of motorcycle seizures, and over a thousand summonses.
Chieng urged the new riders to use their licences positively, by commuting to work, helping their families, and improving their daily lives, instead of engaging in dangerous activities.
The MyLesen initiative, organised with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), aims to help those from lower-income groups obtain a valid licence at minimal cost. For many participants, it’s a life-changing opportunity that opens up better mobility and job prospects.
At the same time, officials stressed that safety should always come first. Motorcyclists make up a large portion of road accident fatalities, and these incidents also bring significant economic costs to the country.
In the end, having a licence is just the beginning. What really counts is how responsibly these young riders choose to use it.
