Authorities in Miri have intensified efforts to curb illegal street racing and traffic-related offences, following mounting public complaints over disturbances to traffic flow and public safety.
The Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of Miri District Police Headquarters (IPD Miri) carried out two separate operations last weekend, resulting in the seizure of ten motorcycles and the issuance of 51 summonses, along with 51 notices from the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah stated that his team conducted the operations across several key locations in the city, including Jalan Piasau, Jalan Miri Bypass, Jalan Bakam, and Jalan Bekenu, among others, after identifying these areas as late-night hotspots for disruptive and potentially dangerous activities.
The first operation, known as Op Motorcycle, took place from 8pm on April 3 until 3am the following day. It specifically targeted illegal street racing activities. During the operation, authorities inspected 33 individuals (28 men and five women) and 31 motorcycles. Enforcement efforts led to the issuance of 21 summonses and 51 JPJ notices.
Investigations during Op Motorcycle uncovered a range of offences, including riding without a valid driving licence, illegal structural modifications to vehicles, the use of modified exhaust systems, absence of side mirrors, missing registration plates, and the display of non-compliant or decorative registration numbers. These violations not only breach road regulations but also pose significant safety risks to both riders and the general public.
A second operation, Op Samseng, was conducted from 11pm on April 4 until 3.30am on April 5. This operation expanded its focus to several other areas, including Jalan Marina and Jalan Tanjung Lobang. Authorities inspected 35 individuals (30 men and five women) and 30 motorcycles.
As a result of Op Samseng, officers seized ten motorcycles under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further investigation and enforcement action, and issued 30 summonses for various offences.
ACP Mohd Farhan emphasised that the police will continue to take a firm stance against illegal street racing and other reckless behaviours on the road. He stressed that such activities endanger not only those involved but also other road users and the wider community.
He also encouraged members of the public to adhere to road regulations, avoid unauthorised vehicle modifications, and refrain from participating in illegal racing activities. Public cooperation, he added, remains crucial in ensuring safer roads and maintaining public order.
Members of the public with information related to illegal street racing or similar activities are encouraged to report such incidents to IPD Miri to assist in ongoing enforcement efforts.
