Lightweight, easy to ride and now with more power, the Ninja 500 SE delivers exactly what 250cc riders have been waiting for.

Kawasaki’s Ninja lineup has been around for more than four decades, and honestly, it’s one of those names that even non-riders recognise. That signature green sportbike flying past on the road, you already know it’s a Ninja. For riders, though, the name means something more. It means performance, sharp handling and that proper sportbike feel.

Kawasaki has launched the Ninja 500 to specifically target the highly competitive and popular lightweight 400cc to 500cc segment. Though it was introduced in Malaysia in March of last year by MODENAS (Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn. Bhd), and may initially appear familiar, it boasts significant changes beneath its fairing.

At its core, this bike replaces the well-loved Ninja 400. The biggest change is the engine, which now grows from 399cc to 451cc. It might not sound like a huge jump on paper, but on the road, it makes a noticeable difference.

Familiar Looks, Better Presence

From the outside, the Ninja 500 still carries that classic Ninja DNA, but with a slightly sharper and more modern look. It now resembles its bigger siblings more closely, giving it a more premium and aggressive presence.

It still feels compact, though. In fact, hopping onto the bike immediately reminded me of the Ninja 250. The size, the weight, the way it sits, it all feels very approachable. And that’s a good thing. Kawasaki didn’t try to make it intimidating. They kept it friendly for its users.

Riding Experiences

If you’ve been riding a 250cc bike like the Ninja 250 or Z250, this is exactly the kind of upgrade you’ve been waiting for. The added displacement gives the Ninja 500 more usable power, especially when you need it. Overtaking feels easier, highway cruising feels more relaxed, and overall, the bike just feels more capable.

It’s not aggressive or scary. Power delivery is smooth and predictable, which makes it perfect for riders stepping into the “big bike” category for the first time. Interestingly, the sound also has a bit of that 650cc character, even with the stock exhaust. It gives the bike a slightly more grown-up feel compared to smaller capacity machines.

Besides that, one of the best things about the Ninja 500 is how easy it is to ride. The bike is lightweight and nimble, making it perfect for Malaysian roads, especially in heavy traffic. Whether you’re filtering through cars on Federal Highway or riding through tight city streets, it feels effortless.

Even though it’s a 500cc, it doesn’t feel bulky or heavy. You can still treat it like a smaller bike, which makes daily commuting stress-free. The 14-litre fuel tank also gives decent range, so you don’t have to keep stopping at petrol stations all the time.

Braking performance is solid and does exactly what you need it to do. The ABS system works well and gives confidence, especially for newer riders who are still building their braking skills. It’s not overly aggressive, but it’s predictable and reliable, which is exactly what you want for daily riding.

Features That Actually Matter

Kawasaki added some useful tech to the Ninja 500 without overcomplicating things. Depending on the variant, you get either an upgraded LCD display or a TFT screen, along with smartphone connectivity via the Rideology app. It’s a nice touch, especially for riders who like tracking their rides or checking basic data.

Other than that, my favorite feature, and one that truly impressed me, is the Kawasaki Intelligent Proximity Activation Start System (KIPASS). This keyless ignition system, (Refer on the image above) is incredibly convenient, allowing for super easy starting. Just stand right close to your bike to start it and this remind me of a Ninja H2 SX SE. You can simply hop on and ride without the hassle of fumbling for keys. Really saves me a lot of time in the morning.

But the only i think that is quite annoying or negative feedback i could say is that you still need to use the the key to ope the fuel tank cap when refuelling. Which quite complacted becasue sometimes i just left the key inside my bagpack so i have to reach it out back and forth so its kinda hassle. Probably the best solution i think was to use aftermarket spin locking tank cap that dont need a key to unlock it.

The Verdict

What’s interesting is that you’re starting to see more and more Ninja 500s on Malaysian roads lately. Since its introduction earlier this year, it’s quickly becoming a popular choice among riders. And now, it makes sense.

With a price of around RM30,100, it sits in a very sweet spot. You’re getting a proper 500cc sportbike that looks good, rides well and doesn’t break the bank.

Somehow I can conclude that this Kawasaki Ninja 500 SE is not trying to be a hardcore track machine, and that’s exactly why it works so well. It’s built for real riders, people who commute daily, ride on weekends and want something that feels sporty but still practical.

For those coming from a 250cc bike, this feels like the perfect upgrade. It gives you more power, better presence and a bit more excitement, without losing that easy, friendly nature. If you’re looking for your first big bike or just want something light, fun and reliable for Malaysian roads, I would say the Ninja 500 is honestly hard to ignore.
