Day two of the Sonora Rally shifted the tone of the race dramatically, as competitors left the coastal start at Puerto Libertad and pushed inland toward Caborca. What began as a fast, flowing stage quickly revealed its true nature: hot, technical, and unforgiving.
The opening stretch allowed riders and drivers to carry serious speed across wide ranch roads, but that early momentum didn’t last. The terrain soon tightened into tricky navigation zones, with soft sand, camel grass, and steep dunes forcing competitors to slow down and think carefully about every move.
Conditions didn’t make things any easier. Rising temperatures and thick dust clouds reduced visibility, catching out several riders along the way. Alan Mason, for example, lost control after riding into heavy dust, ending his day with an injury despite completing the stage.
Timing penalties also played a big role in reshuffling results. Ciaran Naran showed strong pace but dropped down the order after being penalized, handing the stage win to Mike Johnson in the Moto class.
Mechanical issues added another layer of difficulty. Several competitors struggled to keep their vehicles running in the heat and sand, with some forced out of contention entirely. Others, like Ladislao Hernandez Aresti, pushed through technical problems just to reach the finish line under their own power.
Among the privateers, consistency made the difference. Clean, mistake-free runs helped certain teams gain ground, especially those chasing Dakar qualification opportunities.
By the time the field reached Caborca, it was clear that day two had taken a toll. And with an even longer stage ahead, the rally is only getting tougher from here.
