Australian young gun Archie McDonald has made a strong early statement in the new FIM Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup, finishing second fastest at the championship’s first official test at Circuit of the Americas.
Held over three days in Austin, Texas, the test marked the first time the full grid sampled the race-prepared Harley-Davidson Road Glide machines in competitive conditions. The weekend kicked off with a unique “bike lottery,” where each rider was assigned the bike they’ll campaign for the rest of the season, followed by extensive track time to dial in setups.
Brazil’s Eric Granado set the benchmark with a 2:13.413 lap, putting him at the top of the timesheets and around half a second clear of teammate McDonald, who impressed immediately with P2. Oscar Gutierrez secured third, rounding out a competitive top group. Notably, the pace was strong, with times edging close to previous bagger race benchmarks at COTA.
Beyond the lap times, the test served as a crucial learning phase. Riders worked through multiple setup options while adapting to the unique demands of the heavyweight V-Twin machines, known for their massive torque, distinctive riding position, and different handling characteristics compared to traditional race bikes.
A shortened race simulation on Sunday also gave teams a chance to rehearse procedures ahead of the opening round.
McDonald described the outing as a productive start, completing plenty of laps and building confidence despite a small spill while exploring the limits. His early speed, combined with strong team support, puts him in a promising position heading into the first race weekend.
The championship now shifts focus to its inaugural round, set to take place alongside the MotoGP Grand Prix of the Americas. With momentum on his side, McDonald will be one to watch as the new Bagger World Cup era officially begins.
