As traffic volumes surge during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive period, road safety experts are urging Malaysians to be more mindful of one of the most vulnerable groups on the road: motorcyclists.
According to Kulanthayan KC Mani, a member of the Majlis Keselamatan Jalan Raya Selangor, all road users need to better understand the unique challenges faced by motorcycle riders. Unlike drivers in cars, motorcyclists lack physical protection, making even minor collisions potentially severe.
Shared Roads, Higher Risks
Malaysia’s road system is largely based on shared usage, where motorcycles, cars, and heavy vehicles all occupy the same lanes. While this setup is common, it significantly increases the risks for riders, especially during peak travel periods like Aidilfitri when highways and city roads are packed.
Motorcyclists often need more space to maneuver safely, particularly when avoiding hazards such as potholes, debris, or sudden braking ahead. Without adequate room, their margin for error becomes dangerously small.
The Importance of Safe Distance
One of the simplest yet most effective ways drivers can improve safety is by maintaining a proper distance from motorcycles. Giving riders enough space allows them to react to road conditions without feeling pressured or boxed in by larger vehicles.
It’s also important for drivers to stay visible and predictable, avoiding sudden lane changes and checking blind spots carefully before turning or merging.
A Shared Responsibility
The festive season is a time of celebration and reunion, but it also brings a spike in road accidents. Experts stress that safety isn’t just the responsibility of motorcyclists—it’s a shared duty among all road users.
By being more aware, patient, and considerate, drivers can play a crucial role in reducing accidents and ensuring that everyone reaches their destination safely this Aidilfitri.
In the end, a little extra caution on the road can go a long way in protecting lives.
