After nearly three decades at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, MotoGP’s Australian Grand Prix will move to a brand-new street circuit in Adelaide from 2027.

The iconic waterfront venue, located around two hours outside Melbourne, has hosted the Australian round since 1997. However, with its current contract expiring this year, promoter MotoGP Sports Entertainment has confirmed a major shift in direction for the championship’s future in Australia.

Under a new six-year agreement beginning in 2027, MotoGP will race at the newly unveiled Adelaide Street Circuit until 2032 inclusive. The move marks a historic milestone as it will be the first MotoGP Grand Prix to be staged in a true city-centre street circuit environment.

4.195km Layout Through The Heart Of Adelaide

The circuit layout was officially unveiled on Thursday, 19 February, in Adelaide by MotoGP Chief Sporting Officer Carlos Ezpeleta and Premier of South Australia Peter Malinauskas.

The inaugural Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide will take place across three days in November 2027.

The temporary street circuit will measure approximately 4.195km and feature 18 corners winding through the city streets. Riders are expected to reach speeds exceeding 340km/h, making it one of the fastest urban circuits in world motorsport.

The design draws inspiration from the famous Adelaide Street Circuit, which hosted Formula 1 races between 1985 and 1995. However, significant modifications have been made to meet modern MotoGP safety standards, with rider protection remaining the top priority.

Safety and Spectacle Combined

Ezpeleta described the move as a defining moment for the championship.

“Bringing MotoGP to Adelaide marks a major milestone in the evolution of our championship. This city has a world-class reputation for hosting major sporting events, and the opportunity to design a purpose-built circuit in the city streets is something truly unique in our sport.

From the very beginning, together with the FIM, we made sure that safety remained uncompromised — every element of the Adelaide Street Circuit has been engineered to meet the highest standards of modern MotoGP, ensuring riders can race at full intensity with complete confidence.”

He added that Adelaide’s strong culture of major international events makes it the ideal venue for a premium, festival-style urban Grand Prix experience that brings fans closer to the action than ever before.

Major Economic Boost For South Australia

Premier Malinauskas hailed the agreement as a major victory for the state.

“This is a major coup for South Australia and yet more evidence our state has real momentum. We are now competing with the rest of the nation for the world’s best events, and winning.

Hosting the world’s first MotoGP race on a street circuit will give Adelaide a truly unique offering that is sure to attract visitors from interstate and overseas.”

He emphasised that beyond motorsport prestige, the event is expected to generate significant economic activity, support local jobs and further elevate South Australia’s international profile.

With MotoGP enjoying record global growth, Adelaide is now set to become a key pillar in the championship’s future expansion strategy.

Further details regarding the event, including ticketing and support categories, are expected to be announced in due course.
