Lately, social media and the local biker community have been buzzing nonstop following the launch of the Modenas Z15GT. This is not just another new model from Modenas, but a motorcycle that has been talked about for years through rumours, leaked images, and endless discussions in forums and WhatsApp groups. With the first batch now delivered to customers, workshops and riders across the country have already begun testing, modifying, and analysing the bike in real-world conditions.
The Z15GT made its historic debut during MotoGP Malaysia 2024 at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit, marking a major milestone for Modenas. This 149.5cc supermoped is the company’s first fully Malaysian-developed motorcycle, showcasing the brand’s growing engineering confidence and ambition. Positioned against well-established rivals like the Yamaha Y15ZR, Honda RS-X Winner 150, and Suzuki Raider R150 Fi, the Z15GT enters one of Malaysia’s most competitive motorcycle segments with serious intent.
We spent time riding the Modenas Z15GT ourselves to understand what it’s really like on the road and more importantly, to help you imagine how it feels through words alone.

Engine, Specs and Engineering Highlights
Under the fairing, the Z15GT is powered by a 149.5cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine producing 16.76 hp at 9,500 rpm and 13.5 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm. Power is delivered through a six-speed gearbox and chain drive. Braking comes from disc brakes front and rear, supported by single-channel ABS, while suspension duties are handled by conventional telescopic forks up front and a preload-adjustable monoshock at the rear. The bike weighs 128 kg, carries 5.7 litres of fuel, has a seat height of 780 mm, and rolls on 17-inch wheels with a 90/80 front and 120/70 rear tyre setup, just like other 150cc models on the market.
According to Modenas, this is their most advanced motorcycle to date. The Z15GT was developed entirely in-house by a team of 31 Malaysian engineers and designers, with technical support from Kawasaki Motors Corporation. Several engineers were sent to Japan for hands-on training with Kawasaki, while others underwent specialised engine design training in Austria, an effort that clearly reflects in the bike’s refinement.
In terms of styling, the Z15GT may remind some riders of the Y15ZR at first glance, but look closer and you’ll notice its own identity. The sharp lines, muscular stance, and subtle Sugomi-inspired design cues give the bike a more aggressive and mature presence without copying outright.

On the Road: How the Z15GT Really Feels
Out on the road, the bike immediately feels friendly. Getting on the seat is easy, the handlebar position is natural, and the clutch action is light. Pull away in first gear and the power delivery feels smooth and controlled. Riding through city streets, the Z15GT behaves just like a well-sorted 150cc underbone, but with an added sense of polish.
Gear changes are impressively smooth, and the engine delivers power progressively from gear to gear. There’s a noticeable build-up in acceleration that feels very similar to Kawasaki-tuned machines. Having ridden the Modenas Z250 ABS before, that familiar character is clearly present here too. On the highway, we managed to see speeds of over 130 km/h on the MEX Highway, with room for improvement depending on setup and conditions.

Comfort, Ergonomics and the ‘GT’ Philosophy
As a daily motorcycle, the Z15GT makes a strong case for itself. Navigating traffic is effortless thanks to its light weight and good manoeuvrability. Whether it’s filtering through congestion or cruising on routes like the Federal Highway or NPE, the bike feels stable and confidence-inspiring. Low-speed riding is easy, while higher speeds remain manageable without feeling nervous.
The “15” in its name refers to the 150cc class, designed to balance everyday usability with the ability to ride more aggressively when needed. Meanwhile, the “GT” badge, standing for Grand Touring, is not just marketing. Comfort, stability, and longer-distance capability are clearly part of the design philosophy, inspired by the legacy of the old Modenas GT128, once known for its touring-friendly nature.
Importantly, the “Z” name was only approved after Kawasaki was fully satisfied with the final product, adding credibility to the Z15GT as a quality-certified motorcycle rather than just a rebadged project.
Verdict: Is the Modenas Z15GT Worth It?
In conclusion, priced at RM8,288 (excluding road tax, insurance, and registration), the 2025 Modenas Z15GT is more than just a new model, it’s a clear evolution. It definitely offers daily practicality, touring-inspired comfort, and a level of refinement backed by Kawasaki engineering standards.
For riders looking for a capable everyday motorcycle with long-distance comfort, without stepping up to a bigger engine capacity, the Z15GT really stands out as a genuinely attractive option.
Simply put, this isn’t just another kapcai. It’s a serious, proudly Malaysian supermoped that finally lives up to the hype.
