Scooters are making a strong comeback in Australia’s motorcycle market, leading growth across all categories this year.

According to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), scooter sales rose 4.6% in the first nine months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. Scooters now represent 5.7% of total motorcycle sales, a small but growing share driven by urban commuters seeking affordable mobility.

In total, 63,988 motorcycles were sold to the end of September, marking a 2.2% decline year-on-year. While the broader market softened slightly, scooters were the clear bright spot.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said the renewed interest in scooters reflected changing urban travel habits.

Shifts Across Motorcycle Segments

Off-highway vehicles saw the steepest decline, falling 4.3% year-to-date and now representing 15.3% of the total market. Off-road motorcycles slipped 0.7% but remained the largest segment, accounting for 41.2% of sales. Road bikes dropped 3.8%, holding 37.8% of the market share.

Despite these decreases, Weber noted that scooters, which are part of the regulated motorcycle sector, continue to attract a growing number of riders looking for efficiency and simplicity.

Yamaha Maintains Market Lead

Among manufacturers, Yamaha continues to lead overall sales, followed by Honda, Kawasaki, and KTM. The top three brands have all maintained positive results through 2025 despite broader market challenges.

With cities growing more congested and the cost of living rising, scooters are emerging as a smart, budget-friendly solution for commuters, a trend that looks set to continue into 2026.
