French manufacturer DAB Motors is redefining the relationship between design, culture, and mobility with its ongoing Thursday Experiment series. It is a bi-monthly collection of concept electric motorcycles that blur the lines between machine and sculpture.
Each model starts with the same foundation, the DAB 1. It then evolves into a unique artistic interpretation influenced by fields as diverse as fashion, motorsport, architecture, and music. The result is a collection of seven experimental electric bikes that showcase how design can tell stories far beyond performance or function.
Experiment 007: A Neon Ode to the 1980s
The latest creation, Experiment 007: 80s Futurism, takes cues from early computer-era films and the upcoming Tron: Ares. Glowing red lines trace the bike’s aerodynamic silhouette, creating a sense of speed and light in motion.
New aerodynamic panels replace the originals for better airflow. The wheels have been redesigned into hollow forms with no visible mechanical parts, a visual metaphor for digital abstraction. The overall effect is a striking homage to the geometric and luminous aesthetics of retro-futurism.
Pop Culture Meets Engineering
Previous Thursday Experiments draw from a mix of pop culture and industrial design.
- Experiment 005: Drake Airplane channels the luxurious look of Drake’s custom Boeing 767, combining light blue paint, gold trims, and chain-like metallic details across the chassis. The seat design echoes private jet upholstery, while aerodynamic parts give the motorcycle an almost flight-ready silhouette.
- Experiment 003: 90s Racing explores the language of motorsport livery, using rainbow-colored stripes inspired by 1990s race cars to express the spirit of progress and technology.
- Experiment 006: Racing Legend pays tribute to the Ford GT40, reviving its iconic blue and orange endurance racing colours to merge the nostalgia of fuel-based performance with the innovation of electric mobility.
Fashion, Jewellery, and Play as Design Inspiration
DAB Motors also turns to fashion and material culture for inspiration.
- Experiment 002: High Heels reinterprets the classic French black-and-red colour code, revealing red accents only when the bike moves, a clever nod to motion and confidence.
- Experiment 004: Jewelry transforms the glovebox into a jewellery case, emphasising craftsmanship and permanence with a gemstone-blue finish.
- The debut model, Experiment 001: Bricks Edition, mimics plastic toy blocks through modular, block-shaped panels and a transparent red taillight, turning childhood nostalgia into modern design language.
The Future of Motorcycle Design
With each concept, DAB Motors proves that electric motorcycles can be more than transportation — they can be canvases for artistic exploration. The Thursday Experiment series challenges conventional design by merging luxury, nostalgia, and technology into rolling works of art.
As the series grows, DAB Motors continues to push the boundaries of how we experience mobility, not just as movement, but as culture in motion.
