History was made last week Sunday as Yamaha secured the FIM Supersport World Championship Manufacturers’ crown for a record 11th time. The all-new Yamaha R9, competing in its debut season, clinched the title with three rounds to spare, underlining a dominant campaign in the intermediate class.

The 2025 season marked the end of an era with the legendary R6 passing the torch to the three-cylinder “Next Generation” R9. Having bowed out with a final victory in Jerez last year, Yamaha’s new machine wasted no time proving its worth when Stefano Manzi (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) took a stunning win in the season opener at Phillip Island, setting the tone for a remarkable year.

Since then, the R9 has been a force to be reckoned with, scoring 14 victories in 18 races through Manzi and rival Can Öncü (Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Racing). In total, Yamaha riders have collected 30 podiums this season, with contributions from Lucas Mahias (GMT-94 Yamaha) and Alberto Surra, who impressed with a podium on his WorldSSP debut.

The R9 has also shown its strength as a development platform for rising stars. Young talents Aldi Satya Mahendra (Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Racing) and Roberto Garcia (GMT-94 Yamaha) have both made their mark with strong performances and flashes of podium potential.

With three rounds left, Manzi leads the championship standings by 69 points, chasing his first world title, while Öncü sits comfortably in second. Meanwhile, Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing and Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Racing remain locked in a close battle for the Teams’ Championship, separated by just 18 points.

Michael van Zomeren, Marketing & Motorsport Director, Yamaha Motor Europe, hailed the achievement: “This is a hugely important and significant moment for Yamaha as we celebrate victory in the WorldSSP manufacturers’ championship with the all-new R9 in its very first season. It has been a remarkable year for the R9, which started out with Stefano Manzi taking victory in the very first race back in Australia.

“The package has impressed across the season, with a combined 14 victories between Manzi and Can Öncü, as well as strong performances from Lucas Mahias, and rookies Roberto Garcia and Aldi Satya Mahendra. Thank you to our teams, Pata Ten Kate Racing, Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros WorldSSP team and GMT94 Yamaha for their hard work and determination. “

“Congratulations also must go to our Motorsport Division colleagues for developing a race bike that could win in its very first season, as well as assembling a rider line-up capable of achieving this remarkable result. Fingers crossed for the ‘Triple Crown’!”

Yamaha’s sights now turn to the closing rounds of the 2025 season, with hopes of sealing both the Riders’ and Teams’ Championships to complete what could be a historic triple crown.
