Race 2 of Round 4 in the IDEMITSU FIM Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) saw home fans at the Mandalika International Circuit celebrate in style, as local rookie Herjun Atna Firdaus of ASTRA HONDA RACING TEAM powered to his first-ever SS600 victory with a breathtaking last-corner overtake.
The race got off to a fiery start, with Wahyu Nugroho (YAMAHA RACING INDONESIA) storming into the lead as the lights went out, closely followed by Herjun and his teammate Mohammad Adenanta Putra. The opening laps were a tense affair, with Thailand’s Anupab Sarmoon (YAMAHA THAILAND RACING TEAM) also joining the fray as Wahyu tried to hold onto the top spot.
By Lap 5, Wahyu set the early fastest lap with a time of 1’38.829s but was unable to shake off the relentless pressure from Adenanta and Anupab. Moments later, Thanat Laoongplio (HONDA RACING THAILAND) raised the stakes, clocking the race’s quickest time of 1’38.388s at an impressive 244.3 km/h, pushing Herjun down the order as the lead pack jostled for position.
The drama reached its peak on Lap 10 when disaster struck — Wahyu, Adenanta, Anupab, Thanat, and Muhammad Faerozi Toreqottullah (YAMAHA RACING INDONESIA) were all wiped out in a shocking multi-rider crash. Suddenly, the race opened wide for the remaining contenders.
Seizing the opportunity, Kitsada Tanachot (HONDA RACING THAILAND) charged into the lead on the final lap, only for Mandalika to erupt in cheers when Herjun executed a daring move in the last corner, stealing victory at the line with a time of 19’51.767s — just 0.141s ahead of Kitsada. Malaysian rider Kasma Daniel Kasmayudin (HONG LEONG YAMAHA RACING) completed the podium in third.
An emotional Herjun said after the race: “I’m super happy today to take this victory. Yesterday was tough after the crash — it was unlucky, but my team kept supporting me mentally, and I refused to give up. In Race 2, I gave it everything again and it paid off. This win is for Indonesia and for everyone who has supported me.”
