After a record-breaking first 12 rounds, MotoGP enters its high-stakes European swing with four races in five weeks – starting in the Styrian Alps for the BWIN Grand Prix of Austria. The Red Bull Ring is a theatre of speed, drama, and unpredictability, and 2025 promises to be no different. With the summer break over, riders arrive recharged, ambitions reset, and eyes firmly on the championship run-in.
THE TOP THREE: Can Marc Marquez Be Stopped?
Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) has been in unstoppable form, becoming the first Ducati rider to take five consecutive wins and holding a commanding 120-point lead. But the Austrian GP has long been his Achilles heel – he’s never won here and hasn’t stood on the podium since 2019, when he famously duelled Andrea Dovizioso.
Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), unbeaten at the Red Bull Ring since 2022, could be the man to end the #93’s streak. Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) also needs a big result after a forgettable Brno round, chasing his first premier-class podium in Austria.
APRILIA’S CHARGE: Building Momentum
Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) has been one of Marquez’s fiercest challengers, with two Grand Prix podiums and two Sprint podiums from the last three weekends. Teammate Jorge Martin, on his much-discussed return, banked a solid P7 at Brno and is eager to climb further.
Satellite squad Trackhouse MotoGP are also in form: Raul Fernandez has scored five consecutive top tens, including a career-best P5 at Brno, while Ai Ogura looks to bounce back to the top ten after injury setbacks.
KTM’S HOME FIGHT: Powered by the Crowd
For Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, Austria is more than just another round – it’s the home race. Pedro Acosta arrives fresh from a Czech GP podium, while Enea Bastianini (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) took a Sprint rostrum in Brno.
Maverick Viñales returns from injury, Brad Binder recalls his unforgettable 2021 victory here, and the whole KTM camp will be targeting their strongest result of the year under the eyes of their home fans.
PODIUM HUNTERS: Yamaha & VR46 on the Charge
Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) leads the Yamaha push, sitting ninth overall and just seven points off Johann Zarco (CASTROL Honda LCR). VR46 rider Fabio Di Giannantonio will want to erase the memory of a zero-point weekend in Brno, while teammate Franco Morbidelli remains within striking distance of the championship top five.
Top rookie Fermin Aldeguer (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) holds a healthy gap over Viñales in the standings, looking to cement his impressive debut season.
THE OUTSIDE SHOTS: Eyes on the Top Ten
Jack Miller (Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP), a podium finisher here in 2022, returns with back-to-back top tens, level on points with Honda’s Luca Marini. Joan Mir (Honda HRC Castrol), traditionally strong in Austria, looks to close the gap to Alex Rins, while Miguel Oliveira (Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP) revisits the circuit where he claimed his maiden MotoGP win in 2020.
THE VERDICT
The BWIN Grand Prix of Austria is set to deliver fireworks. Can Marc Marquez finally conquer the Red Bull Ring, or will Bagnaia, Bezzecchi, KTM’s home heroes, or another challenger steal the show? The answers will come this weekend – and with the championship’s business end in full swing, every point counts.
MotoGP is back. The chase is on. Welcome to Round 13.
