Jeffrey Herlings is officially back. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing star has confirmed his return to the MXGP gate for this weekend’s Grand Prix of Flanders after recovering from a broken right collarbone sustained in training.
The Dutch rider, known globally for his dominance in sandy terrain, completed a test session aboard his KTM 450 SX-F in the Netherlands on Thursday and felt strong enough to commit to racing in Lommel, a track where he has previously triumphed.
Now 30, Herlings won the 2024 edition of the Grand Prix of Flanders and holds a reputation as one of the sport’s greatest sand riders. In the current 2025 season, he has secured wins in Germany and Latvia from nine rounds entered before missing the Finland and Czechia races due to injury. His recovery has involved nearly a month of natural healing and physical rehabilitation.
Team Management Urges Realism
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager Joel Smets welcomed Herlings’ return but cautioned fans and pundits not to expect instant dominance:
“Jeffrey went riding today and felt good and strong enough to enter the GP this weekend in Lommel. We’re happy to have him back but we have to be realistic about what to expect.”
Despite the time off, Herlings’ speed in sand remains unmatched, and with the #84 lining up alongside KTM’s current title contenders, the team expects to maintain strong momentum in both MXGP and MX2 classes.
“With the #84 also in the gate, we know we can continue to set the pace,” Smets added.
The Grand Prix of Flanders marks a pivotal moment in Herlings’ season and a potential shake-up in the MXGP championship as the series enters its final stretch.
