Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has reached a monumental achievement in the world of two-wheel transportation: the production of 500 million motorcycles globally, marking a legacy that spans over 76 years since the company’s first mass-produced model, the Dream D-Type, rolled out in 1949.

From a humble beginning in post-war Japan, Honda has grown into the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, driven by its belief that “the purpose of technology is to make people’s lives easier.” Honda’s milestone reflects not only the company’s vast reach across 23 countries and 37 production plants, but also its consistent innovation, from internal combustion engines to electric motorcycles.

A Global Journey of Innovation

  • Honda began its global production journey in Belgium in 1963, eventually expanding to over 30 countries, including major motorcycle markets such as India, Indonesia, Brazil, and China.
  • Milestones were reached at increasing speed:
    • 100 million units in 1997 (48 years)
    • 200 million in 2008 (11 years later)
    • 300 million in 2014 (6 years)
    • 400 million in 2019 (5 years)
    • And now, 500 million in 2025 (just 6 years later)

Despite setbacks such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Honda has rebounded strongly, with annual production exceeding 20 million units and a renewed push toward electrification. In 2024, Honda launched the global expansion of its electric two-wheelers, signaling its commitment to carbon neutrality and future mobility.

Ceremony in India

The 500 million-unit milestone was commemorated with a ceremony at Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) in Gujarat. Senior executives including Toshihiro Mibe, President of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., expressed gratitude to customers, employees, and partners worldwide.

Looking Ahead

As Honda steps into the next era, it remains focused on offering innovative, environmentally friendly, and accessible mobility solutions. From commuter scooters to adventure bikes and electric mobility, Honda continues to deliver the “joy and freedom of mobility” to riders worldwide.
