Diogo Moreira (Italtrans Racing Team) stormed into the Moto2 history books at the TT Circuit Assen by clinching his first-ever victory in the intermediate class—and Brazil’s first in the category—after an electrifying duel with Aron Canet (Fantic Racing Lino Sonego). The two went toe-to-toe throughout the race, with Moreira executing a decisive overtake on the penultimate lap to win by just 0.056 seconds.
The drama began early when rookie Ivan Ortola (QJMOTOR – FRINSA – MSI) claimed the holeshot from the front row, but it didn’t take long for polesitter Moreira to snatch the lead through Turns 3 and 4. Canet, aggressive as ever, made his move at the start of Lap 2 and took control of the race. Meanwhile, championship leader Manuel Gonzalez (Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP) struggled with a slow start and slipped back to ninth.
Barry Baltus (Fantic Racing) served two Long Lap penalties by Lap 5, dropping to P14, while Ortola began losing ground under pressure from the chasing pack including Albert Arenas, Joe Roberts, and Jake Dixon. Gonzalez began recovering, making key passes and climbing steadily. By Lap 12, he had muscled his way into third after an assertive move on Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo), but the gap to the leading duo had stretched to over three seconds.
Öncü’s charge ended prematurely with a crash at the final chicane on Lap 14, promoting Dixon to fifth. At the front, Moreira kept Canet firmly in his sights, waiting patiently for the perfect moment. That moment came on Lap 21, as Canet ran wide at Turn 3, opening the door for Moreira to take the lead.
The final lap was a tense thriller, with Canet shadowing Moreira through Assen’s high-speed final sector. But the Brazilian held his nerve to claim a stunning debut win and deliver an emotional milestone for Brazilian motorsport.
Gonzalez’s third-place finish proved crucial for his championship campaign, while Dixon rode smartly to finish fourth after starting 11th on the grid. Joe Roberts fended off teammate Marcos Ramirez by just 0.061 seconds to secure P5, with Arenas, Alonso Lopez, Senna Agius, and Dani Holgado rounding out the top ten.
Dutch hopefuls Zonta van den Goorbergh and Collin Veijer brought cheer to the home fans, finishing in P12 and P14 respectively.
With this iconic victory, Moreira not only claims his first Moto2 triumph but also ignites Brazil’s presence in the championship, placing himself as one of the rising stars of the season.
