With surging production, smart tech, and rising exports, Chongqing is emerging as the powerhouse of China’s electric motorcycle industry.
Electric motorcycles are no longer a niche product; they’re fast becoming the future of urban mobility. And at the heart of this transformation is Chongqing, a city long known for motorcycle manufacturing, now reinventing itself as the engine of China’s electric revolution.
In 2024 alone, Chongqing’s output hit nearly 3 million electric motorcycles, led by heavyweights like Yadea, Aima, and Tailg. With localised parts, streamlined logistics, and strong policy backing, the city is emerging as a key player in global e-mobility.
From Traditional Roots to High-Tech Edge
Once dominated by fuel-powered bikes, Chongqing’s factories now churn out advanced electric models with smart features and upgraded safety systems. Legacy brands like Loncin and Zongshen are pivoting fast, introducing bikes with self-balancing tech, cornering ABS, and blind-spot radar.
Meanwhile, newer players focus on smart connectivity:
- Ninebot delivers remote control and smartwatch pairing.
- CFMoto supports real-time navigation and phone integration.
- Qianjiang adds voice control and hazard alerts.
Global Reach, Local Drive
Exports are surging. In Q1 2025 alone, Chongqing shipped over ¥6.5 billion worth of motorcycles abroad, up more than 67% year-on-year. The city aims to turn this momentum into long-term dominance with a target of producing 12 million units annually by 2027, alongside tighter localisation of core parts.
The Battery Bottleneck
Despite rapid growth, key pain points remain. Battery range drops in cold weather, and costs remain high. Compatibility issues between brands also slow down battery-swapping infrastructure, a critical need for urban users.
Efforts are underway to set industry-wide standards and build quick-swap stations in major cities. Companies and city planners are aligned in pushing for long-term, scalable solutions.
Eyes on the Future: Hydrogen and Beyond
Chongqing isn’t just betting on lithium. In a bold step forward, Loncin and Lingyun have unveiled China’s first hydrogen-powered all-terrain motorcycle, a signal that the next energy frontier is already in sight.
Chongqing has gone beyond assembly lines, it’s building the blueprint for next-gen electric mobility. With deep roots in manufacturing and a clear eye on the future, the city is redefining what a motorcycle hub looks like in the era of clean transport.
