In a move set to redefine the global motorsport landscape, Liberty Media Corporation has received unconditional approval from the European Commission to acquire Dorna Sports, the long-standing rights holder of MotoGP™. With all regulatory hurdles now cleared, the deal is expected to close by July 3, 2025, ushering in what many are calling a “new era” for the world’s premier motorcycle racing series.

A Pivotal Moment for the Sport

The approval marks the final step in Liberty Media’s ambitious plan to bring MotoGP under its expansive sports portfolio, which already includes Formula 1. This alignment of two of the world’s most thrilling motorsports under one corporate roof could signal a major shift in how motorcycle racing is marketed, consumed, and expanded globally.

Liberty’s President and CEO, Derek Chang, called the deal a strategic step forward.

“MotoGP is a highly attractive premium sports asset with incredible racing, a passionate fanbase and a strong cash flow profile. We believe the sport and brand have significant growth potential,” he said.
“We’re excited to deepen the connection with MotoGP’s core fans and expand its reach to new global audiences.”

The Carmelo Era Continues with New Firepower

While Liberty takes the financial and strategic reins, Carmelo Ezpeleta, who has helmed Dorna Sports since 1998, will remain at the head of MotoGP’s day-to-day operations, along with his experienced management team. The move ensures continuity in leadership even as the sport prepares for a wave of commercial and technological transformation.

Ezpeleta welcomed the approval as more than a corporate transaction—it’s a validation of MotoGP’s growing appeal.

“This is an important milestone confirming the even brighter future that lies ahead. Liberty is the best possible partner for our sport,” he says. “We look forward to accelerating MotoGP’s growth and expanding its reach to even more fans around the world.”

Why This Matters

MotoGP has already been enjoying a renaissance. It has record-breaking attendance, new venues like India and Kazakhstan, and a rapidly growing digital audience. But with Liberty’s entry, the scale of ambition is changing. This is the same group that transformed Formula 1 into a global entertainment juggernaut through fan-first strategies, content innovation, and aggressive digital expansion.

Now, similar tools, think Drive to Survive-style content, improved accessibility, immersive fan experiences, and new streaming innovations, could be deployed to turbocharge MotoGP’s visibility and commercial success.

The Deal in Numbers

Liberty Media will acquire an 84% controlling stake in Dorna Sports, while existing MotoGP management retains the remaining 16%. The deal ensures both investment and alignment, allowing Dorna to scale with Liberty’s backing without losing its DNA.

What’s Next?

With the deal set to close in early July, fans can expect more details on Liberty’s vision during the summer break. Key areas to watch include:

  • Digital content expansion and possible documentary features
  • New sponsorship and commercial partnerships
  • Technological enhancements to race broadcasting and on-track data
  • Market expansion into untapped regions
