Back in 2009, D3O made a huge splash with their soft-yet-strong impact protection that redefined motorcycle armour. Fast forward to today, and they’ve just done it again. Their newest release, Diablo, is a serious leap forward in rider safety, comfort, and innovation. If you’re a rider who wants top-level protection without feeling like you’re wearing bricks on your limbs, this one’s for you.
Let’s break it down.
Diablo: Lightweight. Slim. Still CE Level 2.
Diablo uses D3O’s new injection-moulded soft IM material, which means it’s lighter, thinner, and more adaptable than their previous stuff, but it still hits that all-important CE Level 2 rating. There’s also a CE Level 1 option that’s even thinner, for when you want barely-there protection that still actually works.
At just 9.5mm thick, the Level 2 version already feels pretty stealthy. It’s got a new open surface design that lets air flow through more freely—around 38.5 per cent airflow, to be exact. If you ride in warmer climates or do long days in the saddle, this is a big deal.
Soft when you want it, tough when you need it
Like all D3O armour, Diablo uses a smart material that stays flexible while you’re moving around, but stiffens instantly on impact to absorb energy. That means you get protection exactly when and where you need it, without compromising your range of motion.
The big change here is the way it’s made. Instead of using foam casting like in earlier models, D3O switched to injection moulding. Why? More precision, better quality control, and more ergonomic shapes. The Diablo panels come pre-curved, so they naturally follow your body’s contours and feel more secure, especially when you’re leaned over in the riding position.
Comfort meets sustainability
Diablo isn’t just about high performance; it’s got some eco-conscious thinking behind it too. It uses about 20 per cent less material than the older LP1 range, which makes it lighter and more environmentally friendly. That’s a win for riders and for the planet.
Pushing the limits (literally)
CE Level 2 might be the gold standard right now, but Diablo could be hinting at something even tougher. While CE Level 3 isn’t an official standard yet, D3O says Diablo is already operating in that territory. If that’s true, we might be looking at the future benchmark for protective gear.
Not just armour – full rider innovation
D3O isn’t stopping at pads and protectors. They’re also playing with rider comfort tech in other ways. One standout is their AeroMax compound, originally used in racing to reduce vibrations in Formula One and Nascar. Now it’s being adapted into motorcycle insoles to cut down on foot fatigue during long rides. Small detail, big difference when you’re spending hours on the pegs.
Final thoughts on the Diablo
Diablo feels like the next logical step in a world where motorcyclists want to ride harder, stay safer, and feel more comfortable doing it. Whether you’re commuting, touring, or hitting the twisties on the weekend, D3O’s latest offering is worth a serious look. It’s protection you’ll barely notice until you need it.
