In a strategic move underscoring its long-term commitment to India, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt Ltd (HMSI) has announced plans to construct a fourth production line at its Vithalapur facility in Gujarat. Scheduled to begin operations in 2027, the new line will increase the plant’s total annual production capacity to 2.61 million units. Thus, making it the largest motorcycle assembly facility in Honda’s global network.
The expansion comes with a hefty investment of 9.2 billion rupees (approximately RM474 million or 16.1 billion yen). It is targeted at boosting output of 125cc-class motorcycles—one of the most popular segments in India. We can expect the new line to generate 1,800 new jobs. This would reinforce the plant’s role not just in production but also in regional economic development.
Since its establishment in 2016, the Vithalapur plant has seen rapid growth. What started with a 600,000-unit annual capacity doubled within months, and with the third line opening in January 2024, current output now stands at 1.96 million units. The addition of the fourth line marks another significant leap in capacity.
This expansion is part of HMSI’s broader strategy to scale production in the world’s largest motorcycle market. Honda currently operates four plants in India, with a combined annual production capacity of 6.14 million units. With this expansion and additional upgrades planned across other facilities, total capacity is projected to reach around 7 million units by 2027.
HMSI President & CEO Tsutsumu Otani highlighted the significance of the milestone. “Honda has long been investing and expanding its production capacity in India. 25 years on, HMSI has reached the milestone of 70 million units of cumulative production. With this new investment, we will continue to provide attractive products and solidify our leadership in the Indian motorcycle market.”
With this announcement, Honda not only strengthens its presence in India but also signals confidence in the future of two-wheel mobility in emerging markets, where affordability, reliability, and efficiency continue to drive demand.
