Historic KTM MotoGP Bike That Set Speed Record Heads to Auction

KTM is auctioning Brad Binder’s 2023 MotoGP KTM RC16, the same bike that reached a top speed of 366.1km/h at Mugello.

The KTM RC16 that Brad Binder rode to an all-time MotoGP top speed record of 366.1 km/h (227.5 mph) in 2023 is now being offered through Sotheby’s in a no-reserve auction, with bidding expected to exceed €350,000 (approximately RM 1,665,413). This piece of motorsport history represents a rare opportunity to own an authentic, race-winning MotoGP machine directly from KTM Factory Racing.

The auction listing specifies that while the bike remains fully operational (including a live engine start demonstration upon collection), it is intended strictly for display purposes. Modern MotoGP technical regulations prevent private operation due to specialised systems like pneumatic valve actuation and the championship’s unified Magneti Marelli ECU. KTM has sealed the engine and retains first-refusal rights on any future resale.

This particular RC16 represents the pinnacle of KTM’s speed achievements, with its record remaining unmatched until teammate Pol Espargaró equalled it in 2024. The auction comes as MotoGP prepares to transition to 850cc engines in 2027, ensuring this 1000cc machine will forever represent the absolute zenith of Grand Prix motorcycle speed.

Prospective buyers must arrange and fund transportation from KTM’s factory in Munderfing, Austria, where the handover will occur. The sale is subject to VAT on the full purchase price, and KTM has indicated a willingness to discuss limited track use arrangements for serious collectors.

For motorsport enthusiasts, this auction represents what may be the last opportunity to own an unrestricted, record-holding MotoGP bike before the series’ impending engine reduction curtails top speed potential. Bidding is expected to be fierce among collectors and institutions seeking this tangible piece of two-wheeled history.
