Suzuki V-Strom 800RE Review: A Touring Beast

When Suzuki Malaysia introduced the V-Strom 800RE in May last year, it was obvious this bike had something unique to offer. Fast forward to today, and after spending some quality time with this machine, I can confidently say it’s worth every penny and lives up to the hype. Whether you’re an experienced rider or searching for a dependable touring partner, the V-Strom 800RE ticks all the right boxes. Here’s why.

The Heart of the Beast

At the core of the V-Strom 800RE is Suzuki’s 776cc parallel-twin engine, the same powerhouse that drives the GSX-8S and GSX-8R, albeit with different tuning. This engine is an absolute gem, offering smooth, responsive power across the rev range. With 83 horsepower and 78 Nm of torque, it’s more than capable of handling both city commutes and long highway stretches. The addition of a quickshifter as standard is just the cherry on top, making gear shifts seamless and effortless.

Built for the Road (and Beyond)

The V-Strom 800RE is designed as an adventure-touring motorcycle, but it leans more toward on-road comfort and everyday practicality. It’s part of Suzuki’s new latest lineup that includes the RE (“Road Explorer”) and DE (“Dual Explorer”) variants. While the DE is geared more toward off-road adventures with its 21-inch front wheel and wire-spoked wheels, the RE is the street-friendly sibling with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear cast aluminum wheels.

Despite its rugged design, the 800RE feels surprisingly light at 223 kg, a testament to Suzuki’s smart engineering. Plus, with a generous 20-liter fuel tank, you can ride longer without constantly stressing about refueling and trust me, I didn’t either.

Tech-Savvy and Rider-Friendly

Suzuki has packed the V-Strom 800RE with modern electronics that make riding a breeze. It features three riding modes, Active (A), Basic (B), and Comfort (C), each tailored to different riding conditions.

The Active mode, in particular, is a thrill-seeker’s dream, delivering punchy acceleration that you can feel coursing through your body. For more relaxed rides, Comfort mode tones things down, making it perfect for navigating Malaysia’s bustling streets.

The bike also comes with adjustable traction control, adjustable ABS, and a bright 5-inch TFT display that provides all the essential information at a glance. And yes, there’s a USB port for charging your devices easily.

Other standout features of the V-Strom 800RE are its touring-friendly design. With an adjustable windscreen and sturdy plastic hand guards, it’s built to tackle long rides with ease. The deep-dish seat and nearly six inches of suspension travel at both ends really ensure to stay comfortable even on longer rides.

During my test ride on the ELITE Highway, the bike’s exceptional torque and acceleration made every kilometer a joy. All I can say is whether you’re cruising in Comfort mode or pushing the limits in Active mode, the V-Strom 800RE handles like a dream.

Value for Money

Priced at RM 54,800, the V-Strom 800RE is a value-conscious option for anyone looking for a versatile adventure-touring bike. It’s not just about the price, though, it’s about what you get for it. From its powerful engine and advanced electronics to its comfortable design and practical features, this bike punches well above its weight.

Final Verdict

Personally, the Suzuki V-Strom 800RE is, without a doubt, one of the best touring bikes of 2024. It’s a machine that excels in every aspect and really does tick all the boxes. Plus, its sleek all-black colour and design gives it a commanding presence, making you look like a genuine tourer or even an elite VIP escort.

If you’re in the market for a new adventure bike and don’t plan on going off-road too often (let’s be honest, most of us don’t), the V-Strom 800RE should be at the top of your list. It’s comfortable, practical, and an absolute joy to ride. And if I had the budget, I’d seriously consider adding one to my garage.

So, if you’re looking for a bike that delivers on every aspect of a touring bike like performance, comfort, and value, the Suzuki V-Strom 800RE is the touring beast you’ve been waiting for, seriously.
