Reigning MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin is set to make his long-awaited return to the grid at the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix, marking the end of a frustrating hiatus caused by a pre-season testing injury. The Aprilia Racing rider, who missed the opening three rounds in Thailand, Argentina, and the United States, faces a daunting challenge to reignite his title defence against a red-hot Marc Marquez.
Marquez, now spearheading Ducati’s factory team, has seized control of the championship with a flawless start to 2024, sweeping all four races across the first two rounds. The six-time premier class champion’s resurgence has left Martin trailing by a significant margin, but the Spaniard insists his rival’s dominance was no surprise.
“Marc winning is not something anyone couldn’t have expected,” Martin told Gazzetta dello Sport. “He’s a phenomenal rider, and Ducati gave him the tools to excel. But my focus isn’t on him—it’s on my journey with Aprilia.”
Martin’s switch to Aprilia Racing after his 2024 title win with Ducati raised eyebrows, as the Italian manufacturer has yet to claim a MotoGP crown. The 26-year-old admitted his injury, sustained during the Sepang winter test has compounded the difficulty, leaving him “at least 5,000km behind” his rivals in bike development. However, he remains undeterred.
“You have to adapt and learn. I hold no grudges about not staying with Ducati. I like challenges, and there’s no bigger challenge than winning with a bike that’s never been champion,” Martin said. “Everything happens for a reason. This setback will make us come back stronger.”
While Marquez’s four straight wins have stretched his championship lead, Martin’s absence has relegated him to the foot of the standings. Yet the Spaniard’s optimism persists. At Lusail, a circuit where he clinched victory in 2023, Martin aims to accelerate his adaptation to Aprilia’s RS-GP machine.
As the MotoGP paddock gathers under Qatar’s floodlights, fans will be doubting whether Martin can spark a revival, or if Marquez will further cement his grip on the title. For Martin, the mission is clear: defy the odds, one lap at a time.
The Qatar Grand Prix kicks off from 11 to 13 April. Friday with practice sessions, followed by Sunday’s race at 20:00 local time.
