2024 KTM DUKE 250 Review: The Baby Duke That Means Business

December 17, 2024

The KTM Duke 250 is a solid contender in the 250cc naked segment. If you want a bike that’s fun, stylish, and easy to live with, this one’s hard to beat.

KTM’s Duke lineup needs no introduction. Over the years, it has earned its stripes among motorcycle enthusiasts, standing out as a bold statement of performance, design, and no-nonsense riding dynamics. With its unmistakable orange-and-black livery, the KTM Duke is a head-turner both on and off the road.

This year, KTM Malaysia rolled out the 2024 KTM Duke 250, also dubbed as V3, at their 30th Anniversary celebration, alongside its bigger sibling, the Duke 390. KTM’s theme for the celebration was fitting “No Bullshit.” And trust me, the Duke 250 lives up to that promise.

For riders who want entry-level thrills without compromising on KTM’s iconic aggression, the 250 Duke strikes the perfect balance. After taking the bike for a test ride, I can say with confidence that it’s the real deal. Here’s everything you need to know about this updated naked machine.

2024 KTM DUKE 250 Review

What’s New on the 2024 KTM Duke 250 (V3)?

KTM didn’t just stop at a visual refresh. The 2024 Duke 250 gets significant mechanical and tech upgrades that bring it closer to its bigger siblings. Here’s what stands out:

The heart of the bike is an updated 249cc LC4c engine,liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with electronic fuel injection. It churns out 31 hp at 9,250 rpm and 25 Nm of torque at 7,250 rpm, enough grunt for city rides and weekend runs.

The chassis and Suspension for this Duke 250 are equipped with a fresh steel-trellis frame and an aluminium subframe, keeping the bike lightweight and agile. The suspension gets a 43mm WP Apex big-piston fork at the front and a WP Apex preload-adjustable monoshock at the rear, both offering 5.9 inches of travel.

Braking duties are handled by a radial-mounted four-piston calliper and a 320mm front disc, paired with a two-piston calliper and 240mm disc at the rear. KTM also offers engageable rear ABS (Bosch 10 MB Two Channel ABS) and a Bi-directional quickshifter.

Other notable tech features include a 5-inch LCD display with smartphone connectivity, offering four menu options that provide details like fuel range, consumption, and Bluetooth pairing. Additionally, the display includes useful alerts, such as side stand and kill switch notifications, which add to the bike’s practicality.

Besides that, inspired by the Duke 1290, the headlight design is sharper, bolder, and fully LED, giving it that signature KTM “bug-eye” look. Simply put, KTM’s V3 Duke 250 isn’t just a facelift; it’s a solid evolution.

Power and Performance

Riding the Duke 250 in the city is a blast. The engine feels refined and punchy, delivering smooth torque delivery that’s ideal for everyday commuting. You don’t need to rev it to the moon to extract power, there’s plenty of usable performance between 3,000 and 7,000 rpm. The quickshifter works flawlessly, adding to the fun factor.

The bike’s exhaust note, while not earth-shattering, has a nice throaty tone, typical of a single-cylinder motor. I managed to clock a top speed of 141 km/h, which is respectable for a 250cc naked bike.

That said, I did notice a slight jerkiness when shifting between 1st and 2nd gear or when opening the throttle at low speeds. It could be because the review unit had seen a lot of hard riding, but it’s worth mentioning.

Fuel consumption is another plus point. With a 15-litre fuel tank, range anxiety is non-existent. The LCD dash keeps you informed about fuel range and average consumption, a nice touch for budget-conscious riders.

Handling and Ergonomics

The 2024 Duke 250 feels light, nimble, and confidence-inspiring. Weaving through traffic is effortless, and cornering is where this bike truly shines. The revised geometry and slightly longer wheelbase makes it more stable while maintaining that playful Duke character.

At 800mm seat height, the bike is accessible to most riders. The seat itself is comfortable, with ample room for both rider and pillion. Plus, the updated padding means longer rides won’t leave you sore.

Ergonomics are sporty yet relaxed, striking a nice balance between aggressive riding and everyday practicality. The bike’s lightweight and responsive steering make it a perfect companion for city commutes and twisty back roads alike.

Styling and Appearance

KTM bikes are known for their sharp, aggressive styling, and the Duke 250 is no exception. The new LED headlight resembles the top-tier Duke 1290, giving the bike a premium look. The orange-and-black livery is pure KTM—bold, unapologetic, and attention-grabbing.

Even from afar, you’ll know it’s a Duke. The updated graphics and sleek bodywork ensure the 250 looks as sharp as its bigger siblings.

The Downsides

No bike is perfect, and the Duke 250 has its quirks. While single-cylinder engines are torquey and easy to maintain, they lack the high-revving power of multi-cylinder rivals. If you’re chasing top-end speed, the Duke 250 might feel underwhelming compared to other 250cc bikes.

Then, the LCD Dash Aesthetics. The 5-inch LCD display is functional and clear, but it’s monochrome and feels a bit basic. While it fits KTM’s “Ready to Race” theme, a splash of colour would have made it more engaging.

Final Thoughts: Who Is the KTM Duke 250 For?

The 2024 KTM Duke 250 is an excellent entry into KTM’s naked lineup. It’s lightweight, agile, and brimming with attitude, making it a great choice for young riders, commuters, and enthusiasts who want a stylish, no-nonsense bike with KTM’s DNA.

While it may lack the outright power of its multi-cylinder competitors, it makes up for it with torque, sharp handling, and ease of maintenance. Plus, the bold styling and upgraded features make it a standout in the 250cc segment.

For those looking for an everyday thrill machine that’s as fun as it is practical, the Duke 250 V3 delivers no bullshit, just pure KTM.
