Ahead of the Thailand GP, Idemitsu Honda Team Asia has officially announced its rider lineup for the 2025 Moto2 World Championship. Mario Aji, the Indonesian rider, will continue with the team for his second Moto2 season, partnering with Yuki Kunii, a promising Japanese talent set to make his debut in the category.
Mario Aji made his Moto2 debut in 2024, with his best performances being P15 finishes at Catalunya, Mugello, Aragon, and Phillip Island. Despite a challenging season, he has accumulated four championship points and is currently ranked 29th.
Reflecting on the upcoming season, Mario expressed his excitement and determination to improve in 2025, building on the experience gained this year.
“I am very grateful and excited to have the opportunity to continue next year. It will be a challenge, but I am determined to do better than this year. We have had many ups and downs this season, but I have gained valuable experience, and my goal in 2025 is to show everything I have learned. I am very motivated to continue growing in Moto2, and I believe in myself and the team, we will make steps forward,” said Mario.
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all our sponsors, Idemitsu, Honda Team Asia staff, Astra Honda, and also Aoyama-San for putting their trust in me. I will give my best performance and deliver results for all those who have supported me. I look forward to finishing this season strong and entering 2025 with even more confidence, motivation and preparation.”
That way, the Red and White will still have representatives competing in the Grand Prix event.
Mario, now 20, made his Grand Prix debut as a wildcard from Honda Team Asia in Moto3 Emilia Romagna in 2021. In 2022, he was given a full-season contract, which was extended in 2023.
In 2024, Mario moved up to Moto2 to replace Ai Ogura. Next season, Mario will be the main rider in this squad, after Somkiat Chantra officially moved up to MotoGP with LCR Honda Idemitsu.
Meanwhile, 2025 will mark Yuki Kunii’s debut in the Moto2 category. The Setagaya-born rider made his Grand Prix motorcycle racing debut in 2019, appearing as a wildcard at Brno. Yuki Kunii then competed in Moto3 for full seasons in 2020 and 2021.
“First of all, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Honda and Idemitsu for giving me the opportunity to compete in the World Championship with Honda Team Asia. I would also like to thank the team and sponsors for their unwavering support over the years in the Asia Road Racing Championship and the Japan Championship,” said Yuki Kunii.
“With my previous experience in the Moto3 World Championship, I understand the big challenge that lies ahead in the Moto2 category. However, I am fully committed to giving my best next year, showing my full potential and proving myself worthy of the trust that has been placed in me.”
