National rider Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah missed the chance to secure a podium finish in Race 1 of the Asian Superbike 1000 (ASB1000) category at the 2024 Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC).
Despite starting from the front grid, the JDT Racing Team rider finished in fifth place with a time of 25 minutes and 38.191 seconds.
The race was won by Japan’s Yuki Kunii from SDG Team HARC-PRO Honda Ph, who clocked 25:31.250s. Malaysian rider Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman of TKKR BMW Racing Team secured second place with 25:34.412s, followed by Thailand’s Nakarin Atiratphuvapat from Honda Asia-Dream Racing Astemo in third, finishing with 25:36.101s.
Hafizh had a strong start, leading the race until the second lap, but a slight wobble caused him to go wide, allowing Yuki and Azlan to overtake him. Nakarin then passed Hafizh in the fifth lap, putting him under pressure from ASB1000 championship leaders Andi Farid Izdihar, Zaqhwan Zaidi, and Soichiro Nakamoto.
In a fierce battle for fourth place, Hafizh briefly reclaimed the position from Andi Farid but ultimately finished in fifth after Andi secured fourth.
Despite a strong start, Hafizh finishes fifth as Japan’s Yuki Kunii secures victory in a competitive race.
Reflecting on his win, Yuki Kunii expressed his excitement, saying, “I’m very happy with the result and thrilled to have won. Since yesterday, I felt great with the bike and track, and I had confidence in my pace.”
“Although Hafizh delivered an incredible lap time in qualifying, I knew my strength was in the race. I’m delighted, especially as my championship standings are improving, and I look forward to Race 2 tomorrow,” he added.
Hafizh will have another chance to chase victory at the Sepang International Circuit, with Race 2 of the ASB1000 taking place on September 15 (Sunday).
