The roar of classic and vintage motorcycles filled the air as more than 600 riders, impeccably dressed in their finest dapper attire, gathered for the Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride (DGR) 2024 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, today. Organized by Throttle Riot, a Malaysia-based motorcycle enthusiasts’ group, this year’s DGR event united the motorcycle riding community to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health. This marks another significant milestone in the global fight for men’s health.
The Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride (DGR) is not just a parade of stylish motorcycles; it’s a worldwide movement uniting riders to support Movember. It is the leading global charity dedicated to changing the face of men’s health. Founded in Sydney, Australia, by Mark Hawwa, it was inspired by the classic image of Don Draper from the TV program Mad Men. The ride has become an annual event bringing together hundreds of riders in cities all over the world. Globally, this year’s DGR has attracted nearly 100,000 riders in more than 100 participating cities. These riders join forces to highlight the critical issues of prostate cancer and men’s mental health.
A Stylish Turnout in Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur saw an impressive turnout, with over 600 registered participants cruising in style. The ride’s starting from was at Bukit Kiara Sports Complex and the endpoint at the beautiful National Art Gallery in the heart of the city. Leading the ride was the Guest of Honor, Mr. Kamil Bin Munim, Political Secretary to the Minister of Finance, Ministry of Finance.
At the National Art Gallery, riders were treated to an afternoon filled with entertainment from Johny 23, Reloveution, and Karpet Terbang. The event also featured a motivational talk by certified counsellor Renn, who underscored the importance of mental health and well-being.
Throttle Riot: Champions of Men’s Health
Throttle Riot, the event’s organizing group, has been at the forefront of DGR in Malaysia since 2015. It has been hosting rides across various cities including Penang, Ipoh, Johor Bahru, and Kedah. This year’s ride in Kuala Lumpur continues to build on its legacy, having raised over RM125,000 since its inception.
Raja Susrina, the founder of Throttle Riot, expressed her gratitude. “Organizing the Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride is a profound honour and privilege for us at Throttle Riot. This event is vital in raising awareness and funds for prostate cancer and men’s mental health, causes that deeply impact our community. This year, in Malaysia alone, the Distinguished Gentlemen’s Rides held all over the country have managed to raise about RM23,000 (about USD$5,000). We are incredibly thankful to all the riders who participated today for their tremendous support and generous donations. Your continued support and contributions are essential in our mission to make a meaningful difference in men’s lives.”
The Global Impact of DGR
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men globally, with over 10 million men living with or beyond a diagnosis. Simultaneously, the issue of men’s mental health and suicide prevention remains a pressing concern, with one man lost to suicide every minute worldwide. The funds raised by the global DGR movement will go towards supporting groundbreaking research and initiatives through Movember, aiming to improve the lives of men affected by these challenges.
A Community Effort
This year’s Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in Kuala Lumpur was a resounding success. Needless to say, the success was courtesy of the generous support of numerous partners, sponsors, and supporters. Police escorts from PDRM and road marshals from HOG Marshalls ensured the ride went safely and smoothly.
Official sponsors, including Ddpai, Eiger Malaysia, MJ 7, DC Zone, Grafa, Hikari Riders, and Music Bliss, truly bolstered the event. Venue sponsorship was provided by Kementerian Belia dan Sukan and the National Art Gallery. Beverages were generously supplied by Kem Kopi and Hausboom.
Additionally, partners such as Mentari Cycles and GKL Empire offered invaluable support. The event’s success was further ensured by the contributions of supporters.
