Electric mobility is rapidly transforming transportation worldwide, and innovations like e-scooters, e-bikes, and electric motorcycles are reshaping the way people move. While such vehicles are often considered recreational toys in the US, a broader perspective reveals significant developments in lightweight, two-wheeled machines.

One noteworthy example is the collaboration between Ghanaian firm Kofa and Chinese e-mobility company TAILG. The collaboration resulted in the creation of the Jedi. It is an impressive electric motorcycle specifically engineered to tackle Africa’s challenges and harsh climate.

The tagline “Designed in Ghana. Built for Africa.” encapsulates Jidi’s mission, emphasizing its commitment to delivering impressive performance, range, and safety as a utility-focused machine.

Technologically, the Jidi houses the Kofa’s Kore2 battery. It offers a commendable range of 100 kilometres (62 miles). What sets it apart is the innovative Swap & Go stations, allowing for a quick battery swap in just 30 seconds. This concept is reminiscent of Gogoro’s battery-swapping infrastructure for Smartscooters.

Performance-wise, the TAILG Jidi is powered by Kofa. It also features a 72V mid-mounted motor propelling the two-wheeler to a top speed of 85 KPH (53 miles per hour). This places the Jidi in a performance category comparable to a 125cc gas-powered motorbike or scooter. Additionally, the Jidi offers adjustable drive modes, enabling riders to optimize performance based on terrain and personal preferences.

Kofa claims that the Jidi can reduce running costs by up to 30 per cent compared to traditional gas-powered alternatives. This contributes significantly to reducing carbon emissions.

The motorcycle’s rugged styling includes dual-sport tyres, an exposed steel frame, and a simple suspension system. It emphasizes durability and adaptability to diverse conditions.

Practical features such as a long bench saddle for carrying passengers or cargo, USB charging ports, LED lights, and a CBS (combined braking system) enhance the Jidi’s appeal. Moreover, the motorcycle is designed for longevity and easy maintenance, allowing users to perform basic maintenance with standard tools.

As of now, Kofa has not disclosed the pricing for the Jidi electric motorcycle. However, the company claims significant cost savings, hinting at a competitive pricing strategy. With the increasing demand for mobility solutions in Africa and beyond, innovative offerings like the Jidi have the potential to revolutionize electric mobility, making it more accessible to a broader audience.
