In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable and eco-friendly logistics, DHL Express continues to lead the way in Malaysia by expanding its electric vehicle (EV) fleet. The company has recently added 44 electric vans and seven electric bikes, further solidifying its commitment to clean mobility. This expansion builds on DHL Express’s pioneering deployment of electric vehicles for logistics in Malaysia in October 2022.
The new additions to the EV fleet include Blueshark R1 smart electric scooters. It is strategically designed to enhance the efficiency of pick-up and delivery services, especially for documents and small shipments. These two-wheeled vehicles will be deployed in key areas such as the Klang Valley, Penang, Melaka, and Ipoh. This contributes to the overall goal of electrifying 60 per cent of DHL Express’s vehicle fleet by 2030.
Each Blueshark R1 e-bike comes equipped with a 2.88kWH dual battery. It offers an impressive 110 kilometres of NEDC range on just 3.5 hours of charging time from any 220 to 240V power source.
These electric scooters offer a practical solution for urban roads. The electric scooters boast a 90% lower annual CO2e output than conventional 150cc engines. This makes them a sustainable choice for lighter payload transport.
Julian Neo, Managing Director of DHL Express Malaysia and Brunei, highlighted the company’s dedication to environmentally responsible practices.
“In facilitating global trade and supply chains, we believe it should not come at the expense of the environment. Expanding our EV network marks another significant step in our journey to be net-zero carbon by 2050.”
The ambitious plan to transition 23 per cent of all last-mile delivery vehicles in Malaysia to electric by the end of 2024 aligns with DHL Express’s broader goal of achieving a 60 per cent electric fleet by 2030.
Thushan Gooneratne, Vice President of Operations, at DHL Express Malaysia, expressed confidence in the role the company plays as a driving force to accelerate adoption and facilitate positive changes in the logistics sector.
DHL Express’s choice of Blueshark as a partner in fulfilling its sustainable mobility ambitions has garnered positive feedback.
“DHL Express plays a major role in defining the standards for the logistics industry, and we are delighted that they have chosen Blueshark to fulfil their sustainable mobility ambitions,” says Jeff Chong, Group CEO (ASEAN) at Blueshark Ecosystem Sdn. Bhd.
Blueshark’s Internet of Vehicles (IoV) enables fleet customers to monitor and track their vehicles in real-time. It provides essential data such as performance metrics, ride history, vehicle condition, and battery range. This integration of technology ensures a seamless and instant overview of the fleet’s operational status, contributing to enhanced efficiency.
Fleet electrification stands as a key carbon reduction measure in DHL Group’s Sustainability Roadmap. The company invested EUR 7 billion in the current decade on the path to achieving net-zero carbon emissions. With 29,200 EVs worldwide and 27,800 dedicated to pick-up and delivery, DHL Group maintains global sustainability leadership in logistics.
As DHL Express expands its EV fleet in Malaysia and implements innovative solutions in collaboration with Blueshark, the company is spearheading green logistics in the region. Not to mention, DHL is setting an example for the global logistics industry to embrace sustainable practices for a cleaner, greener future.
