Since its debut in 2013, the BMW R nineT has held its place as one of Germany’s best-selling motorcycles, celebrated for its versatility as a “blank canvas” open to customization by enthusiasts. BMW continues this legacy with the introduction of the new R 12 nineT roadster and R 12 cruiser motorcycles.

The original R nineT, introduced in 2013, seamlessly blended classic motorcycle design with modern technology, craftsmanship, and diverse customization options. Over time, the R nineT evolved into a model family within the BMW Motorrad Heritage world, laying the foundation for the new R 12 series.

The guiding principle for the development of the R 12 nineT was “The Spirit of nineT”. The model aims to to uphold the success of its predecessor with its archetypal look, timelessness, and high customization qualities. The R 12 nineT, a classic roadster, focuses on making a stylish impression in urban environments while delivering dynamic riding fun on winding country roads. On the other hand, the R 12 cruiser embodies “The Spirit of Easy”. It offers a much more classic cruiser experience for cool and relaxed biking.

The R 12 series maintains the “blank canvas” ethos. It combines the authentic character of the boxer engine and traditional design language. It also features innovative technology and a modular concept that provides maximum customization options.

The emphasis during design development was on reduction to the essentials and attention to detail. This gave the motorcycle a strong emotional appeal. Celebrating a century of the boxer engine, synonymous with BMW motorcycles, the R 12 nineT and R 12 models feature a 1,170cc air/oil-cooled boxer engine. It is capable of delivering 110 Ps at 7,000 rpm and 96 Ps at 6,500 rpm, respectively.

The chassis redesign includes a new airbox integrated under the seat and a distinctive “Twin Pipe” exhaust system, catering to both roadster and cruiser preferences.

The R 12 nineT boasts classic design elements with modern features, including analogue round instruments, a USB-C port, and a 12V socket. The newly developed tubular bridge steel spaceframe replaces the previous frame, reducing weight and providing a cleaner, classic appearance. The aluminium tank, seat, and tail hump contribute to a dynamic line, while improved ergonomics enhance the rider’s experience.

In contrast, the R 12 cruiser showcases a steel tank reminiscent of 1970s BMW /5 models, a classic teardrop shape, and a relaxed seating position with low seat height and wide handlebars. The large 19-inch front wheel and small 16-inch rear wheel complete the cruiser aesthetic.

Both the R 12 nineT and R 12 come in three colour options each. It offers riders a range of choices to suit their preferences. The R nineT roadster options include Blackstorm Metallic, San Remo Green Metallic, and Option 719 Aluminum. Each colour adds a touch of personalization to the classic design.
