Sepang International Circuit closed this March for paving works

Sepang International Circuit will be closing the circuit next month to work on Turns 7,8 and 9 of the circuit.

Sepang International Circuit (SIC) will undergo upgrades starting this March to ensure user safety. This is much needed especially ahead of the 2023 MotoGP World Championship race at the Malaysian GP this November.

However, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SIC, Azhan Shafriman Hanif, said that the paving work only involved 1km at Turns 7, 8 and 9 of the entire 5.54km circuit.

“This circuit is like a football stadium which needs maintenance. We see that there are some places that need to be upgraded,” said Azhan.

Azhan said that SIC needs the Government’s help to ensure that the circuit is always in good condition. This is because paving the entire circuit requires an expenditure of about RM20 million.

The improvement work was supposed to start in 2021 but was met with delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Azhan, the International Motorcycle Federation (FIM) has expressed its views to upgrade the circuit before the Malaysian Grand Prix this year.

“Once we get the approval, we plan to close the circuit in March and reopen it in May. This is to ensure the condition of the circuit is fully ready for use,” said Azhan.

The last time SIC upgraded the circuit was in 2016 and have not done any new paving work since then.
